A Garden Update - Papaya Time!

A Garden Update - Papaya Time!

Papayas seem to be the one plant that will thrive in my area. Lucky because I do love the fruit even though they take such a long time. But its a labour of love as they say. Today let's go have a look at some of the younger ones just getting started in life. Every plant has a story so let's have a closer look.

garden 3.jpg I dug a hole and threw some seeds in and look what came up! I'll transplant them to open space as some begin to look stronger than others. I put the stairs on top as the workers around here seem to love destroying plants.

There are some papaya seeds that started sprouting inside the fruit. Anxious to get on with it they are...

This plant was producing some quite nice fruits until the workers tried to kill it. Papayas are quite quirky plants. They can die so easily for no reason yet seem to love being reborn after being chopped. Its as if they say "Hey, I'll be the one that decides my fate, not you"

This rather big and lovely tree had lots of fruits and for some reason decided it had enough of life and started to die. I chopped it and let's see if it comes back or not.

This is a transplant which if it does well will be transplanted again. The garden area doesn't have full sun all the time so this pot can be moved around. Of course these days the sun is behind the clouds most of the time if not raining ;) At least I don't have to water the garden.

garden 5.jpg
This is a transplant from the seed area. Looks to be doing well. When first transplanted the seedlings often times lose some leaves but produce more on the top.

I dug a shallow trench and threw in more papaya seeds from harvested and eaten (yummy!) fruits. A great feeling to grow from seeds from your own harvest. A feeling of real self sufficiency. That's a mango from the squirrels. They'll eat a few bites from the tree above and move on to the next. Quite wasteful. I'll have to have a word with them haha.

I love it! At least I enjoy your posts about your papaya plants, I wish I had a space to put some where I live. By the way, I am curious how long does it take for the papaya plant to bear fruit?

Hi thanks so much for enjoying! Well, the time to fruit harvest depends on the amount of sun (the more the better) and the quality of the soil (easy draining). So the quickest may be around 6 months until ripe fruits. The unripe ones come earlier. These took around 18 months because of not optimum sun exposure and the soil isn't the best although I add compost and coffee/tea grounds. I had actually given up on having ripe fruits and let my neighbors pick a lot of the green ones until I saw the green fruits starting to turn yellow... Since then the harvest has been pretty regular and so tasty! They really don't take much space at all as they basically just grow straight up :)

Sounds like my kind of fruit! Nice post...

Thanks :) Yes you can't tell that fruit anything haha...

I'm not sure whether the squirrels will listen - my chickens ignore me.

Green papaya salad? Yummmmm

Squirrels have their own language for sure. Chickens? We have those too. They are cheeky haha

Oh yes! haha! I love it! Try to remove the pebbles and clean the area. It will be great! The green grind papaya, we called it ACHARA and preserved in a bottle!

Papaya is our favourite fruit. We daily eat papaya in the morning when it is available in the market. Wish I have a garden and lot of papaya tree in it. Thanks for sharing interesting stuff!

I'm not sure I've ever seen a papaya looking so good after being topped. Usually they die if the tops are cut or knocked off, very much like a coconut tree. If things work out like other plants that get topped or pruned, you might have 2x the amount of papaya on that tree. Excited to see the results...
