From Rhizome, to Potted Plant, to Harvest ~ Growing My Own Turmeric for Food and Medicine

in Natural Medicine8 months ago (edited)

Last summer I was gifted a single turmeric rhizome which, instead of eating, I decided to plant in a pot. I was not expecting much but, to my surprise, even in a temperate climate you can grow turmeric as easily as any other potted plant.

In a tropical climate turmeric can grow year round in the ground or a pot, but, not here. Now that winter is nearly upon us (in the Southern Hemisphere) and the aerial leaves of the turmeric plant have turned yellow, I decided to dig up the plant and see what has grown underground.

Why grow turmeric? What are the medicinal properties of this herb?
Well, in recent years this root (often in powdered form) has gained fame as a anti-inflammatory herb. I realized I had never truly verified this often repeated claim and decided to crack open my herbalism books to see what they had to say about this rhizomatic herb.

According to Rosemary Gladstar turmeric possess anti-tumor and anti-biotic properties which I had never heard before! Michael Tierra (another renowned North American herbalist) agrees as far as the tumor dissolving properties, especially in the uterus!

In his book "Planetary Herbology" Tierra has listed turmeric as an Emmenagogue, meaning the herbs can alleviate cramps and regulate the menstrual cycle. Along with the anti-tumor properties this herb sounds like a great ally for women of all ages. I wonder if taking turmeric can prevent or treat uterine fibroids? I will do more research on that and let you know soon, dear reader.

My turmeric roots are cleaned and harvested and sitting in my kitchen waiting to be used in cooking. With what I have learned from my recent research I also add a few slices to my pre-menstrual tea too. Of course, we are probably all most familiar with turmeric for it's role as a key ingredient in curries and now I know that it provides much more than color and flavor!!

Nice post. I hope that these tips can help you to get the most from your Turmeric.

Turmeric is a wonderful healer, especially when combined with Ginger to help disperse its properties throughout the body and help move it around. A touch of Black Pepper is renowned for activating its properties and boosting them in a synergistic way.

It works best when in an oil, as the Curcumin is oil soluble. You get some benefit in water but its nowhere near as potent.

Let us all know how you go.

I have heard that before about combining turmeric with ginger and black pepper. Now I am wishing that I had added that info into this post. In the next few days I plan to share about my harvest of ginger roots so maybe that would be a good time to include more about combining with other herbs.

Thanks so much for the information and support, it is always nice to communicate with other herbal enthusiasts here on Hive!!

It's great to share knowledge about herbs.

Formulation is a fascinating artform, mixing herbs tigether to maximise the benefits of a brew. It's often prudent to add a herb to a mix that has a specific function (like Ginger for dispersing or Mugwort to carry the benefits deeper into the body) or an affinity For a specific organ or system (eg Nettles for the kidneys) to help carry the benefits directly to where you want to use them.

I was inspired by your post to wrote one of my own about a classic mix of Yarrow, Peppermint and Elder Flower. Thanks!

great article & nice photos of the homegrown root! ;)
here is mine / sprouted indoors last winter / now in June ~ Northern hemisphere

it is my first time growing it... gonna hopefully harvest something!

It looks like your turmeric plants are off to a great start!! Growing indoors is probably the best way to go as they can be better protected from cold that way. Thanks so much for sharing :)

yes for the start phase they were always close to the warmer tubes...watered regularly.
as soon as the outside temps gone up around 15-20 C it has gone outside on the sunny balcony (were it is now) although there were much hotter days (around 35) and it stands the heat!
We'll see ;)

Thanks for your reply! I liked your blog and followed!
Kind regards from Bulgaria and much love!

Woah! Uterine fibroids? That’s news to me.
At first I was like oh that’s ginger….and then I saw the title and I didn’t see ginger.
I Never knew turmeric was a rhizome, in fact after reading this article I got to know I knew nothing nothing about tumeric.
Thank you for the enlightenment as always🧡

I thought it was ginger too! Ginger and turmeric are a lot alike and the plants are nearly identicle but once you cut open the root it is clearly orange while ginger is yellow. I will let you know about fibroids but, one book I read said they can help eliminate tumors in the uterus.

Oh okay, I’ll sure will be waiting

Yes: I'd also highly recommend using pelvic/ vaginal steaming to take in turmeric for anything specifically relating to the womb 🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥rather than taking it orally or in any other way.

this tip has helped me a lot and i've been steaming since a year now ;)

So glad you've found steaming and are using it, dear @charlissy - it is the most potent way to keep our pelvises in high-vibration healthy!

back then, women also used it as an everyday routine, not only to energize themselves, but also to cleanse themselves of past and current relationships. it is part of our ancient tradition, which was part of our worldwide high culture.

i like it very much ! :>

Precisely: I hope so much that it can spread to all women, and never be lost or oppressed again!

Oh! Good advice! Do you steam the root or will powdered turmeric work too? Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

I imagine root would be less messy 😍

Wow! Turmeric is the best ....👍

I knew about some of turmeric properties but had no clue it can help one with so many problems in his/her body! Thanks for the heads up! I should definitely have this more often in my lifestyle :)

Yes turmeric is really amazing and surprisingly versatile. It has also been nice to read the comments and see what other Hive folks use turmeric for!

Wow, you are a really hard worker, bro, keep up the enthusiasm and have a nice day ❤

Thanks so much!!

I should have said too, @calendulacraft, that white sage has potent properties also for clearing womb issues like you mention. My own success with steaming has cleared so-called 'polyps' and 'irregular cells' in my cervix, as well as extreme pelvic pain and infection... I used it alongside a lot of other work around de-armouring pelvis/ womb/ cervix/ yoni, and regular discipline in reawakening the microcosmic orbit. You may be interested in Woman Heal Thyself by Jeanne Elizabeth Bloom and the Mantak & Maniwan Chia book on Cultivating Female Sexual Energy - though there's little that can match our simply breathing more consciously deep into the womb. In my immense healing transformation, the greatest catharsis has come from placing attention on cervix and breathing around the microcosmic orbit, just allowing the bodymindspiritcosmos to settle back into the right ways - which it will do if we give it space and right microclimate: everything else is like seasoning/ extra help, but the core presence and breath is everything 🙏🤗🌟 If you'd like to talk more about any of this, I am on Signal App and love going deeper on these issues! Much love in your blessed healing path!
