SINCE CHILDHOOD I had problems with the respiratory organs; the polyps and sinusitis I have often make my nose stuffy, especially during the rainy season. In the past, when my illness recurred and our parents had no medical bills, my mother used to pick the betel leaves that grew behind the house. Mother washed it and then pounded it until thick green water came out, then the betel water was dripped into my nostrils.
When the water droplets of the betel leaf flow into the nostrils, you will feel your nose is cold and sore. It hurts until the tears come out on their own, and there is nothing you can do except moan. But the pain you feel doesn't last long. No more than a minute or two. And it's true as the old saying goes, 'there is wisdom in suffering,' my nose is slowly returning to normal. It's not clogged anymore. The pain that I had felt was replaced with how relieved breathed fresh air as usual.
When I was little, I didn't really ask my mother why she chose betel leaf to treat me. One thing I know, when I was gasping for breath in the rainy season, my mother would immediately do the 'ritual of betel leaf'. Later, when I was in college, I just found out why my mother used betel leaf because it turns out that one of the ingredients is polyphenols which makes it have antiseptic properties that can overcome inflammation caused by fungal infections—the question of where medically explained, the sinusitis I suffered from began.
The information I got from reading health articles convinced me to inherit the mother's ritual with the betel leaf. I still hold on to how my mother treated me with betel leaves when my sinusitis recurred, and I am grateful that in these four years the disease has not shown its nose even though it is the rainy season.
Yesterday I visited a friend's office. On the back wall I found a betel tree hanging from a corner of the fence, very lush. For the sake of seeing the betel whose main stem actually grows behind the fence and the thick leaves creeping up to the backyard of the office makes me reminisce on the mother figure with her first ritual. The benefits of betel leaf that can heal me through the grace of a mother's love made me want to take a picture of it, for which I express my gratitude to mother through writing in this post.
By the way, my mother is now 71 years old, and thankfully she is still in good health, her teeth are intact (perhaps because she likes to eat betel leaf—another benefit of betel leaf), and the next two days she will come from the village to visit me, who now lives in Banda Aceh. That's it.

Daun Sirih; Cara Bagaimana Ibu Mengobatiku
Sekian.
