[ENG-SPN] The Romanesque jewel of El Arenal / La joya románica del Arenal

The sun gives strange perceptions when its light filters through the old arcades of this immemorial temple, which, despite their stubborn silence of centuries, seem to want to invite the traveler to cross the threshold, where awaits him, with the patience of everything that has nothing left to lose, a school where the archetype was put at the service of Theology.

We are on the outskirts of a typical Segovian village, whose name, El Arenal, barely does justice to the surroundings of pine forests and scrubland and as usually happens in most of the small communities of that other Spain, the rural one and even, it is possible, that, in some cases, the happy one, not a soul is seen in the deserted streets.

The church of San Juan Bautista, despite the degrading reforms that, rather than enlarging it, have miserably contributed to giving it a strange appearance, very far from the original, continues to be, in spite of everything, another of those immemorial treasures of an architecture, Romanesque, that is well worth continuing to discover.

Otorga el sol extrañas percepciones cuando su luz se cuela a través de las viejas arcadas de este templo inmemorial, las cuales, a pesar de su obstinado mutismo de siglos, parecen querer invitar al viajero a franquear el umbral, donde le espera, con la paciencia de todo aquello que ya nada tiene que perder, una escuela donde el arquetipo se puso al servicio de la Teología.

Estamos a las afueras de un típico pueblecito segoviano, cuyo nombre, El Arenal, apenas hace justicia al entorno de pinares y monte bajo que le rodea y como suele suceder en la mayoría de las pequeñas comunidades de esa otra España, la rural y hasta es posible, que, en algunos casos, también la feliz, no se ve un alma por las desiertas callejuelas.

La iglesia de San Juan Bautista, no obstante, las denigrantes reformas que más que engrandecerla han contribuido miserablemente a darle un extraño aspecto, muy alejado del original, continúa siendo, a pesar de todo, otro de esos tesoros inmemoriales, de una arquitectura, la románica, que bien merece la pena continuar descubriendo.
