In a place of song, as the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias did when he began his brilliant artistic career leaving behind the muddy locker rooms of a club with a galactic trajectory, Real Madrid, today we also take a jump to Galicia, to take a look, although brief but intense, at one of the key points of this mysterious Path of the Stars, placing ourselves in the small town of Barbadelo in Lugo.
There, next to countless signs offering lodging to travelers and pilgrims, it is nevertheless obligatory to visit a curious 12th century Romanesque church, which, under the patronage, precisely, of that son of Thunder, who, according to the chronicles was the Apostle Saint James, remains almost unchanged by the fanatical passage of a time always bent on reducing everything to ashes, although certainly not to the thousands of pilgrims, who still, after centuries, know that it is another of those essential milestones of the Way, which they have to visit.
Although Aymeric Picaud does not mention it in the first pilgrim's guide, the Codex Calistinus, it is known that, in those dark medieval times, the innkeepers of Barbadelo sent out to attract the attention of pilgrims with promises of the best hospitality they could find on that part of the Way and therefore also the best services, but the reality, in many cases, was completely different and many of them ended up swindled and without money in their pockets, so that, in the face of this looting, which unfortunately occurred in many places related to the Saint James Way, there was always the consolation of a church, which, like this one in Saint James, partly alleviated the excesses that were committed, which, as hard as it may seem to say, were also part of the teachings that were learned during the pilgrimage journey: the darkness of the human soul.
En un lugar de un canto, como hiciera el cantante español Julio Iglesias cuando comenzaba su fulgurante carrera artística dejando atrás los embarrados vestuarios de un club de galáctica trayectoria también, el Real Madrid, damos hoy nosotros también un salto a Galicia, para echar un vistazo, que no por breve deje de ser intenso, a uno de los puntos clave de ese misterioso Camino de las Estrellas, situándonos en la pequeña localidad lucense de Barbadelo.
Allí, a la vera de innumerables carteles que ofrecen hospedaje a viajeros y peregrinos, obligatorio ha de resultar, no obstante, visitar una curiosa iglesia románica del siglo XII, que, bajo la advocación, precisamente, de ese hijo del Trueno, que, según las crónicas fue el Apóstol Santiago, permanece casi inalterable al paso fanático de un tiempo siempre empeñado en reducirlo todo a cenizas, aunque no, desde luego, a los miles de peregrinos, que todavía, al cabo de los siglos, saben que es otro de esos hitos imprescindibles del Camino, que tienen que visitar.
Aunque Aymeric Picaud no lo menciona en esa, la primera guía del peregrino que es el Codex Calistinus, se sabe, que, por aquellos oscuros tiempos medievales, los hospederos de Barbadelo enviaban a atraer la atención de los peregrinos con promesas de la mejor hostelería que podían encontrar en esa parte del Camino y por lo tanto, también los mejores servicios, pero la realidad, en muchos casos, era completamente diferente y no pocos de estos terminaban estafados y sin dinero en los bolsillos, de manera, que, frente a este pillaje, que, por desgracia, existía en numerosos lugares afines al Camino de Santiago, siempre había el consuelo de una iglesia, que, como ésta de Santiago, paliaba en parte los desmanes que se cometían, los cuales, por duro que parezca decirlo, formaban parte, además, de las enseñanzas que se aprendían durante el viaje de peregrinación: la oscuridad del alma humana.
