Estatua del Arcángel Miguel, cultura e historia (Esp/Ing)

Caminando desde el Polideportivo Feliz "Lalito" Velázquez rumbo a Hola Súper Center, por la Av. Cancamure, me detuve ante una gran estatua, la cual se alzaba imponente bajo la inmensidad del cielo. La célebre imagen corresponde al Arcángel Miguel, espada en mano, sometiendo al maligno y está ubicada en la Urbanización San Miguel en la Parroquia Altagracia.

Walking from the Polideportivo Feliz "Lalito" Velázquez towards Hola Súper Center, along Cancamure Avenue, I stopped in front of a large statue, which stood imposing under the immensity of the sky. The famous image corresponds to the Archangel Michael, sword in hand, subduing the evil one and is located in the San Miguel Urbanization in the Altagracia Parish.

En contadas oportunidades he pasado por este lugar, pero en autobús, así que veía la estatua a lo lejos. Sin embargo, en esta ocasión, me desplazaba a pie y aquella imagen de cerca me pareció impresionante. El Arcángel Miguel cuenta con muchos devotos porque, a partir de las sagradas escrituras contenidas en La Biblia, representa el triunfo del bien sobre el mal, de la salud ante la enfermedad, de la justicia ante la adversidad.

I have passed by this place on a few occasions, but only by bus, so I could see the statue from afar. On this occasion, however, I was on foot and I found that image impressive up close. The Archangel Michael has many devotees because, according to the sacred scriptures contained in The Bible, he represents the triumph of good over evil, of health over sickness, of justice over adversity.

Mientras tomaba las fotografías, de inmediato vino a mí el cuento Del hijo de Pedro Emilio Coll, relato que leí hace algunos años y cuyo argumento se basa en el significado que le puede dar cada persona que observa la imagen. La ingenuidad de Higinia, personaje principal, y su fe genuina sostienen la historia. Acá la carga cultural juega un papel importante en la narración porque Higinia era una mujer analfabeta que creía en la intervención divina a tal punto que logró un milagro.

While I was taking the photographs, the story Del hijo by Pedro Emilio Coll immediately came to my mind, a story I read some years ago and whose plot is based on the meaning that each person who observes the image can give to it. The naivety of Higinia, the main character, and her genuine faith sustain the story. Here the cultural load plays an important role in the narrative because Higinia was an illiterate woman who believed in divine intervention to such an extent that she achieved a miracle.

Mientras detallaba la estatua recordaba el cuento, no es adorar una imagen sino la creencia de que existe un Dios de paz y amor capaz de sanarla lo que la salvó. Higinia pudo contemplar lo que está más allá de la imagen, de allí que su espíritu recibió lo que anhelaba.

As she detailed the statue she remembered the story, it is not worshipping an image but the belief that there is a God of peace and love capable of healing her that saved her. Higinia was able to contemplate what is beyond the image, hence her spirit received what she longed for.

Me gusta pasear a pie porque siento que la ciudad me habla, me dice que más allá de lo cotidiano existe un mundo por descubrir y esta tarde encontré un espacio para la reflexión tras mi encuentro con una estatua.

I like to walk on foot because I feel that the city speaks to me, it tells me that beyond the everyday there is a world to discover and this afternoon I found a space for reflection after my encounter with a statue.
