I hope you are all very well and enjoying this weekend; today I want to share with you these pictures of a pair of millipedes that in the first picture looks like one but in reality they are two.
They are very elusive and quick when they feel threatened; these in particular have not noticed my presence otherwise they hide quickly and this place where they are is great for them because there is a lot of grass and stones where they can move as if it were a huge maze; I have noticed that they stop every moment to rummage through the moss.
As you can see they go in and out between the stones; possibly there are more than two and while one goes in others come out but I have only managed to distinguish only two of them; they move like sniffing from one side to another, sometimes they stop and take things between their legs as if analyzing them; I understand that they eat remains of vegetable matter but also incorporate to their diet certain insects and invertebrates as long as they have an adequate size to devour them.
In spite of their small size they generate fear and respect since many of these millipedes secrete toxic substances when they feel threatened and some species have a bad smell to warn potential predators that they are not edible; some species of these polydesmids can squirt a stream of venom from a meter away; these substances may contain hydrogen cyanide.
The armor works like armor; we may not be able to perceive it but here it acts like a destructive machine that devastates everything in its path; it began entering through a space that it seemed it could not pass and pushing the web aside it passed without any problem and when the spider came out to secure its prey it found that the prey was it and when it returned inside the thousand feet went after it, captured it and took it out to devour it as can be seen in the photographs.
Then I could see the other millipede a few centimeters out from between the stones; everything is wet because it rained during the night so I guess that benefits it somehow because during sunny days you don't see them hanging around.
In some places they have to stretch to the maximum to be able to adapt to the terrain and you can see perfectly where each segment of the body begins and where it ends, you can also clearly see each keel; these would be those lateral extensions. Espero todos estén muy bien y disfrutando de este fin de semana; hoy quiero compartirles estas fotografías de un par de milpiés que en la primera foto pareciera que es uno pero en realidad son dos.
Son muy escurridizos y rápidos cuando se sienten amenazados; estos en particular no han notado mi presencia de lo contrario se esconden rápidamente además este sitio donde se encuentran es genial para ellos ya que hay mucha hierba y piedras por donde pueden transitar como si fuese un enorme laberinto; he notado que se detienen cada momento para hurgar entre el musgo.
Como se puede ver entran y salen entre las piedras; posiblemente sean más de dos y mientras uno entra otros salen pero yo solo he alcanzado a distinguir solo dos de ellos; se mueven como olfateando van de un lado a otro a veces se detienen y toman cosas entre las patas como analizándolas; tengo entendido que comen restos de materia vegetal pero también incorporar a su alimentación ciertos insectos e invertebrados siempre que tengan un tamaño adecuado para devorarlos.
A pesar de su pequeño tamaño generan miedo y respeto ya que muchos de estos milpiés segregan sustancias toxicas cuando se sienten amenazados además algunas especies tienen mal olor para avisarles a posibles depredadores que no son comestibles; algunas especies de estos polidésmidos pueden arrojar un chorro de veneno a un metro de distancia; estas sustancias pueden contener cianuro de hidrógeno.
La coraza sí que funciona como una armadura; quizás no lo podamos percibir pero aquí actúa como una maquina destructora que arrasa todo a su paso; comenzó entrando por un espacio que parecía no podía pasar y apartando la telaraña paso sin ningún problema y cuando la araña salió asegurar su presa se encontró con que la presa era ella y al volver adentro el mil pies fue tras ella, la capturo y la saco para devorarla como se puede ver en las fotografías.
Luego pude ver al otro milpiés a escasos centímetros que salía de entre las piedras; todo esta mojado porque llovió durante la noche así que imagino que eso lo beneficia de alguna manera ya que durante los días soleados no se les ve dando vueltas por allí.
En algunos lugares tienen que estirarse al máximo para poder adaptarse al terreno y se logra ver perfectamente donde comienza y donde termina cada segmento del cuerpo también se observa claramente cada quilla; estas serían esas extensiones laterales. Bueno amigos ha sido un gusto compartir estas fotografías y aprendizajes con ustedes les deseo que tengan una linda mañana, tarde o noche según sea su ubicación.
