With the holidays and the pleasantries of the pre-season out of the way, it is now time for NCAA basketball to dig into conference play. There are some really strong conferences this year, so I can only imagine how crazy conference play is going to be. Take the Big Ten for instance. With Michigan gunning for the number 1 spot, and a couple other teams in the top ten, competition is going to be fierce.
However, before we get to that point, we need to focus on a few more of the games that happened over the holiday break.
Actually, because of the holiday happenings, the first game didn't take place in the top 25 until this past Sunday. There were only two games and neither of them were upsets.
Monday is when things really got back to normal with 13 games in the top 25 being played.
Not a single one of them was an upset, but number 9 Michigan State had a really great win over a tough Cornell team 114 to 97. While I thought it was going to be a fairly easy game for them, It was a really good test for the Spartans before they head into Big Ten play.
Tuesday gave us five games in the top 25. Once again, here were no upsets on Tuesday, but don't worry, that is definitely going to change once we get past all of these cupcake games.
Finally, last night we had three games in the top 25 and as I said, we finally got our first upset in a while. Virginia Tech had an absolute banger of a game taking down number 21 Virginia, but it took them an insane three overtimes to accomplish this feat!
There are no college basketball games tonight as we focus our attention today on the college football playoffs. I'm actually sitting on the couch right now watching the Oregon/Texas Tech game as I write this post. I will have a full recap of all the action tomorrow when I am back in my office.
Then on Friday we start college basketball up again with some huge match ups in the Big Ten. Number 8 Michigan State is going to be taking on Number 13 Nebraska, and number 2 Michigan is facing a ranked USC team. All of them have pretty decent records, so it is going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.
