A much needed break ( away from our land )

in Homesteading5 days ago (edited)

I am sitting in the sunshine on the balcony of the house that Clare and I still own but does seem to fade away when we aren't there

She acquired this space; a quirky 10 room (art)house in the centro storico of Guardia S. over 15 years ago. By the time we got together/I came to the rescue, in September 2024, she was totally tired of it.

We sometimes almost forget that this house exists.

Especially when we are in the middle of all the chaos on the land that we bought almost half a year ago.

This 'new' land I am talking about is a 1.1 hectare plot with 80+ olive trees, a variety of fruit and nut trees and patches of forest. It is located on mountainous hills ( 650 meters above sea level ) and nearish the Adriatic sea. A two and a half hour drive North from Clare's old house.

As our one and only house-like building on our new land isn't fully weather- and Winter proof yet and Clare and I really needed a bit of a relief from the cold, the wind, the chaos and all the work that 'needs' to be done there, we decided to take a little break and drive back to her okd place in Guardia Sanframondi, to enjoy a bit more warmth and comfort and actually slow down somewhat, for a change.

part of the historical center of Guardia Sanframondi

We spent the last two days of 2025 there and are planning to possiby stay on for another handful of giorni to get some much needed rest.

Right now, @clareartista is getting back into her (handi)craft, working on a sewing project.

Art and creativity/the creative processs have been the main focus for her, since her younger years. Not just a side hustle.

Understandably so, she struggles to get into her creative flow on our land. And so do I.

There is just too much to do there, too much clutter, limited space and a little less comfort than we actually need, especially this time of the year.

Suddenly, a four minute hot shower each ( yesterday night ) feels like luxury and so does sleeping on double mattresses, in a warmer and, more importanty, wind- and waterproof room.

We are slowly recharging our batteries. It was much, much needed.

All is well.

Although we plan to sell this place - we actually meet up with someone who might help us out with the process, tomorrow morning - we are grateful to still have Clare's old house as a plan B/hideout.

Even more now, since our Winter rental near our new land didn't work out.

No matter how much we love (being on) our new land, we are happy to have a little bit of a holiday/some time away from jt.

Wherever you are on this plane(t), I wish you a beautiful new beginning.✨

Much love from Italia,

Vincent.

Yeh being too cold or too hot can really sap you. Currently we have the opposite problem where the main aircon in the house decided to stop working again over silly season and my cousin (a sparky) is unable to come have a look til the supply shops reopen next week. Fortunately our house is really old and has very high ceilings and is shaded by a tree, if it was one of the normal cookie cutter houses with lower ceilings built with the full expectation that home owners would "just install aircon" it would be truly disgusting.

How much do you need to sell Clare's house? Is it possible to use it for wintering (and possibly the heights of summer if you get hot summers) while you're fixing up the house on your land? As going from the photos I've seen that may take multiple years especially if you're doing most of the work yourself.

I think this at least further demonstrates the importance of backups/fallback plans :)

Glad you manage to survive the heat without a quick A/C fix.

Keep an eye on my (possibly daily, I am upping the frequency) posts and it will probably answer your question(s) over time.

Money ( of selling the house ) would be super welcome/helpful but as we can use it as a temporary over-Wintering space, it clearly isn't the right time to sell (yet).

Having a hide out, is not only practical, but also very reassuring.
Hope it'll work out for you to get rid of the thing and get yourselves positioned nicely on (close to) your new land.
For some reason I always thought you were in Spain. Turns out it is in fact Italy. My bad! 😆
The words 'Adriatic Sea' in your post made me frown and look up things on Maps. Spain and the Adriatic Sea felt a bit weird to me.
NJOY 2026 very much!

Thank you for your kind words, @edje! Ik waardeer het :^)

In my early days on Hive/Steemit, I spent 2 months in Spain, before I settled in Portugal, in 2018.

I also shared about my previous stay(s) on las Islas Canarias ( in 2016-17)
and Spain, in the more distant past ( 2007 and 2009 ) so that might have lead to your confusion.

I am in Italy for the long term now.

Gelukkig nieuwjaar/buon ano!✨

Ah ok, I guess I mixed up things. Wasn’t following many posts for quite some time as well when I focussed on the music section only. Upon my return am getting back to all sort of content. Anyways, happy 2026 in Italie.

I hear that. We downsized as it was too hard to maintain it. I have lots of gardening and projects to do here, but we have organised it so it's easier to take a step back

I'm glad you have had a break. It's been a busy year for you both, full of excitement and wonder but also hard graft. It'll get easier once you can build a weatherproof home, whatever that might look like ...

Thank you for your kind words, Kylie.
It has been an intense year indeed but the Universe is perfectly balanced so 'hardship' is always followed by more ease.

Abbracci!

I'm keeping that in mind as I face yet another struggle this year!

Well said.
Gracias e buona

Happy 2026 Vincent!

Insgelijks, Tony!
