Setting up a weather station with data logging

in Homesteading11 days ago (edited)

Around where I live, its hard to get accurate weather info. I live many miles away from the closest public weather station. So about a year ago I set up a basic local weather station. I would see my rainfall totals, temperature and other stats were different from what was reported far away. I think having a local weather station helps me better understand what is going on in my neck of the woods.

But this year I upgraded to a better weather station, it has more features. Including a way to log the weather data locally. So I can check at any time the current weather conditions.

Previous to this Tempest Weather System, I had an Ambient weather station and dashboard. I was unable to make use of a logging machine with this. So I had to upgrade to something a little nicer.

Finding a good place to mount it I pick one of my poles I did not end up using for the solar panels. I will probably add a pole mount and get it up higher but this is a good start.

All attached and facing north it should be ready to start broadcasting weather data back to my home.

Should be interesting to see how this holds up, it has an internal battery that recharges by solar. Though I hear in a few years I may need to replace the battery, not the most simple job but thats awhile from now so I will worry about that when it happens.

The weather station pairs with a wifi bridge that then broadcasts the collected data to a virtual machine I have running Home Assistant. This runs on a mini-pc and seems to work okay for now. I may need a better host machine if I collect more metrics. This opens the door to lots of cool IOT devices, but for now it seems to run okay on a little mini PC on a virtual machine.

This app logs all the data and puts it in graphs and such. I could just use their own app on the Play store, but I would rather have my own local server than deal with their app.

The main page we can see all the current stats.. It has lots of sensors, will be interesting to see them through out the seasons.

By clicking on the data points it brings up graphs that shows the data collected over time.

Certain charts such as wind direction will look better with some tweaking soon. So now I just get bearing, but eventually I hope to add more of an indicator to show direction.

Placed by the solar panels, I should have a good idea of the brightness of the sun. My last weather station was a few hundred feet from them. So this new one should hopefully give me some good stats just on the sun alone.

So next I plan on tweaking the dashboard to show the data better. But I am really happy now so be able to look back at temperatures and see how cold it got in the morning. And looking forward to some storms coming through to test that lightning sensor. Will be interesting to get a map function working hopefully to show the data better when strikes happen.

Nice I have a similar ambient weather station and love it. Had the same issue with no nearby stations in Vermont, and they were all several hundred feet altitude below us. Here in Florida, there's several within a few miles, but it's nice to see what the winds are right at our house during storms/hurricanes, and love the additional sensors. We added one that sends the pool temp back to the dashboard. Haven't got the lighting strike detector yet, but on my list. Mine also feeds into WeatherUnderground, so I have my own custom WU page which is cool for us weather geeks. lol

Ah nice, yeah its a good little weather station.. basic and worked well. They made a wifi version but I decided to get the Tempest instead as it has more sensors.

Oh cool. I could broadcast my data to the public as well but decided to keep it private.

Great setup my good man!!

thanks much, it is all coming along.

Good evening my brother

The weather station is very useful for you and very beneficial. I can learn more from your post. It's really amazing

Have a nice day my brother

Yep.. it should be. Thanks hope you have a good day too.

The result of my friend's extraordinary work, making a homemade local weather station to get weather predictions around you is very important, and I can also see in some of the graphs that you show there are some data clues, and hopefully your work can be maximized.

My question is, is this tool resistant to rain and lightning my friend, because I see this tool installed freely without even a cover.

Sure seems like a cool gadget.. yes it is meant to be out in the open. The rain sensor needs water to hit it to read it..

As for a lighting strike.. lol hopefully it does not get struck.. Would probably destroy it.

This is amazing, how accurate is this compared to regular ones...

Seems pretty accurate compared to my previous one.

Great keep improving it...

this is really awesome, you can think of something better to help, accurate weather information. I hope this work goes optimally.👍💪

Yeah it is pretty cool..

Will do an update when I get the dashboard looking more pretty.. maybe when I mount it to a pole.

Ready. will wait and I want to see it☺️

This is a great job! Integrating a weather station with your home system is very smart and offers many benefits. Interesting to see that local weather data can be closely monitored. Hopefully the dashboard and sensors will be further optimized!

I think so it should be really useful... thank you

That is pretty cool. My dad has a weather station that he maintains. I'm not sure the brand, but I think he paid a bit for it so it's more than just what you might find at the store. I've been using the weatherunderground site and app for a while now because it pulls data from local people with setups like this. It gives you a bit more of an isolated view versus the major radars that NOAA and the TV stations own.

Oh nice, yeah there are some really fancy ones out there.

That is a great site, I have been using weather underground for well over a decade and its my goto site for weather.

There is a crypto that rewards weather station data 👍

Oh cool.. but I do not want to broadcast mine.

I think if I were you I would do the same!! But probably you still have access to weather apps tracking radars to track storms etc which is also nice. Now you just need to track the amount of rain since you are planting etc I would recommend that ;)

Yeah I do, I have a radar app I use regularly.

Stay tuned for my next post, I build my own doppler radar with data logging :-P

Having healthy and successful weather data can make your job easier. They have been wrong about some of their weather forecasts lately. I think they are making predictions based on data that is far away from me.

Good evening my friend, the station looks very beautiful and very useful for you, I hope you have a pleasant day with beautiful weather and can carry out your activities smoothly ❤️

Que viva hive y los paneles solares ..

Hah yeah man

Thank you for your support my brother, it really is not easy to work collecting garbage and washing streets, and even less so in Venezuela, but I am really proud of doing it

amazing job! it's great your a smart guy, using solar panel is very important because now a days all the prices are high. Congrats and stay safe.

Ah thanks, I try my best.

This is a fantastic post detailing your weather station upgrade!Your enthusiasm for the Tempest system and Home Assistant integration is contagious.I especially appreciate your detailed explanation of the setup process, from mounting the station to configuring the data logging in Home Assistant. The choice to prioritize a local server over a cloud-based app is a smart one, ensuring data privacy and control.I'm particularly interested in your plans for future improvements, like enhancing the wind direction display and adding a map function for lightning strikes. It sounds like you've got a great foundation for a really sophisticated weather monitoring system.I'm excited to see the data you collect throughout the seasons, especially the solar irradiance readings given its proximity to your solar panels. Thanks for sharing your project with us!

Glad you enjoyed the post, indeed all the data should come to be helpful.

Life is really sweet with technology.
Overtime at home villa, there are some works we need to do at farm and we need to start monitoring the wind/weather manually before we get the actual time to ride on. With this, it won't give much stress.

This is a good one ✌️

Yeah I think so too, having my own weather stats should be helpful in that aspect.

local weather station

A local weather station? oh dear I love it!!

At this point, it's safe to say that Mr. Solominer your life is adventurous, and you sure make gardening look wonderful and exciting and I find that cute😊

Hah yeah always doing something over here.

Wow! Are all these solar panels yours? You're unique! Plus, you even have your own weather detection system. Impressive! =)

Yep, those are all mine. thanks

Very cool! I like the idea of having the stats from previous days, months, years.

Yep, looking forward to logging a lot of data over the next few seasons.

WoW!!! What's an innovative work. Using solar panels are big help in conserving Electricity and it is very useful in times of blackout. And you use this also for your weather station upgrade and for monitoring the weather in your place, good job!!!

Yep, those solar panels help out a lot and now I have local weather data which is great.

It does look like a cool device.

Yep it is.

Holy SHIT that is cool!

Was that a pretty penny? I would love to have one of those for myself! Maybe up on the roof next to Helium node ;)

Where do you come up with these awesome features to add to the homestead?!

Also, my gargantuan upvote pushed this post past $100! I remember when we were just starting and could only dream of that. Congrats on your awesome homestead and your success here old friend.

Yeah it was about twice as much as my last weather station, this one cost me a little over $300. Helium node? I will need to look into that.

Well I liked my old weather station but I could not see any kind of previously collected data.. just highs and lows. So I figured it would be nice to have something a little more advanced.

Hah! I saw it at $99 and was wondering who pushed it over.. thanks man, yeah quality and consistency is key. Seven years in the making :-)

Not sure a Helium node is worth it for the return but it sure was when I put it up a couple years ago.

Great post as always my friend.

I have been wanting a weather station and that Tempest is pretty cool. We will be putting that on the list of ones to consider. Looking forward to the next post about it.

Hey @pooky-jax ✓ this Tempest unit out.

Thank you, ah nice yeah it is a pretty cool gadget.

You have got weather updates right at home, that's very interesting and I'm sure they are most reliable.

Your very own weather station is very awesome indeed! It looks as though it's collecting a ton of data but can I ask how will you use it to assist you for practical purposes? And also does any of the equipment provide you with forecasting capabilities? That would be really awesome and useful to you if it can, especially at that local level.

Very cool. As a side note I've seen a weather station that was part of a Depin project, if I can find the post I'll share it here.

I'll be curious to see how much the data you collect differs from the data that is report for your area. Just eyeballing some things at our rural site there is sometimes some variance, but we are close to a regional airport so it's not that far off.

I think we get some microclimate effects because we are at a local high spot for miles around.
