From the forest to the furnace – December firewood collection

in Homesteadinglast month (edited)

Pretty much every day, going outside and getting firewood has been what is on the agenda. Luckily the weather has been pretty mild the last few weeks. But with the forecast calling for mornings in 15F(-9C) degree range I know the furnace will need lots of wood to keep the homestead warm.

Using old firewood is preferred, when I have to cut up freshly fallen trees they are (green) and have much of their sap and water inside. These do not burn well, so I am always on the lookout for fallen trees. Or even better are dead standing trees, as they have not been laying in wet ground and are usually very dry.

Taking my morning items with me. Coffee, water, gloves and a hat if I get cold. I usually take that cap off as soon as I am done driving and start processing wood. Get too hot in it, but might not be saying that later in a few days.. lol Mornings have been warm, but soon they will be quite awful to work in..So getting as much done now is preferred.

Starting off the day, I got enough to get us through maybe 1.5 days. But I want to stack up closer to a weeks worth, maybe optimistic but much more than I got now.

Collecting some downed trees along the forest road I take back a UTV beds worth of trees.

The smaller stuff makes good fire starting tinder, and the larger branches and logs kept sustain once lit.

Mostly small and medium sized wood, if it gets cold enough having larger logs help too.

Not sure what kind of fungi this is, but it looks happy.

I know these logs are old when they are growing fungi on them.. perfect time to burn them.

Coming back down the forest road with my firewood I see a good tree to cut down soon. Its a dead pine, the top has snapped off. Excellent source for firewood.

I take a few loads back to the wood furnace, the more heavy loads I need to drive my UTV in low to make it up the hill.

Feels good to collect the firewood and have a source of heat for my homes. It heats the water heaters and provides us with central heating. Collecting the firewood is and burning it, and feeling that heat is the fruits of the labor.

Making a nice pile of firewood. Just need to cut them down a little bit and they are ready to throw into the furnace.

Soon I will collect more and add it to the pile, always spotting new trees to pull firewood from that are already dead. And if I want to collect them from the ground there is a near endless amount to find.

For the next few months this will be pretty much a daily activity, finding more firewood.. processing it and burning.

That's the way to do it. Much better than burning fossil fuels. Stay warm!

I think so as well, its quite nice to have an alternative to use. Will do :-)

Wow... There are so many trees that have dried up in the forest of your area, when the stove needs firewood to warm the contents of the house, of course this is a good way to go to the forest to get it, in my area also the temperature is currently reaching 12 degrees Celsius, if I may know what the temperature is in your area if winter comes, is it below the temperature in my area again, my friend?

Yep there seems always to be many trees to collect. Glad to have them.

That is pretty mild compared to our winters.. we get down below negative celsius here. But I am glad we have such cold days, otherwise we would never get fruit trees in many cases.

Wow, your narrative has really transported me right into the woods, feeling the smell of wood, the cool air, and the warmth of hard work. Oh, and may the weather stay nice, and may your woodpile continue to grow steadily! Enjoyed reading and enjoying this down-to-earth portrait of your life. Have a great weekend too!

Ah glad you really enjoyed my post about collecting firewood.

Thanks much, will do. Hope you have a good weekend as well.

thank you so much brother🙋‍♀️

If the trunk and crown (deciduous) have been lying flat on the forest floor for more than three years, I would leave them there to rot. In the case of conifers, it is no longer worthwhile to remove them after two years. The heating energy drops rapidly from this point.

Yeah true, they get all rotten and water logged after being on the ground for awhile. I try to always find freshly fallen trees, or even better are the ones dead but still standing.

Ohhh!!! So I see the production and harvesting of logs continues 🪵😊👌👏. How cool my bro 😎.

Excellent images and the one with the mushrooms on the trunk is great @solominer !!! Happy Sunday Crack !!! Cheers

Ohhh!! Por lo que veo sigue la producción y recolecta de troncos 🪵😊👌👏. Que bueno mi bro 😎.

Excelentes imágenes y la de los hongos en el tronco esta genial @solominer !! Feliz Domingo Crack !! Saludos

Hah yeah it was cool to see mushrooms growing from the logs.

Yeah man always busy over here.

I didn't think it got that cold down where you are. We got down around 20 degrees today. It looks like it is going to be a clear night, so we should dip down quite a bit more.

Yeah seems it does, got down to single digits last year. Not often, maybe just a couple times every year though.

Ah, that's interesting. I think we were negative this past weekend. Probably only the first of many for us!

Good job. Good luck🍀. Have a great day!

ah thanks

All I love about this firewood of a thing is its warmth status. I also like the site of the forest

So true, and with lots of wood I should have what I need.

We were thinking about installing a wood burning unit I like the idea of off grid heat even though i takes a bit of effort on your end. It looks like you already have some good tools to help out.

Ah yeah it is quite a bit of work. Lots of trenching and running water lines through the houses.

But it seems like its worth it.. our second winter using ours.

i've got a boiler system already i was wondering if Incohdk use my mono flow system with a bypass to an external heater? With all my pipes already ran I feel like I just need the unit.

Some types of wood have a very high temperature. Like pine and oak. We have been using natural gas for heating for 4 years. The wood temperature was different, I miss it. It was like a friend.

Ah yeah so true, I am still learning it all.

Nice, we have propane as a backup. But I prefer to collect the firewood.

I feel ya, something special about the firewood.

Sounds like fun! And practically a free way to keep the place warm.

Yep, just my time invested into the activity.. a little diesel and the costs of blades. Not much though compared to the cost in propane.

thanks, hah yeah after a long day of hard work does feel good to relax.

Collecting the firewood is and burning it, and feeling that heat is the fruits of the labor.

Ohhh yeah brother that’s the fruit of your labour!!!! Keep stacking them up

Yup, hard work pays off.

I imagine you singing country music while collecting firewood. 😀

These mushrooms look like oysters.

May you have some warm celebrations with your family. I have had a cold for 2 days.

A hug Solo

These mushrooms look like oysters.

Absolutely not! These are Trametes versicolor, or Turkeytail fungus. It is unedible, unlike oysters.

Look at the pattern of the shell, that's what I mean.

A! I thought you are about Oyster mushrooms, !LOLZ
ok then 😜 🐈

Why can't you trust an atom?
Beause they make up everything.

hehe I do enjoy listening to country music while I work.

thanks man

You have collected very neat pieces of wood, this wood must be very flammable. always enthusiastic and fun brother @solominer79

I do like looking at them, all kinds out there in the forest.

thanks.

yes, very useful. You are welcome, my brother

The weather really is very cold over there, snow, winter and all of that, and all these woods for heating up the house.
In my world, the temperature is mostly too high for comfort, different strokes for different folks huh?

Yep sure does get cold here.. I feel ya.

It gets quite warm here too in the summer, but glad we have seasons here.

This is a very good time to collect wood.Dead trees are the best for fuel.It is good to make the right decision at the right time. best wishes for you

Thanks, I agree its the perfect use of it.

Best wishes for you

Good evening my brother.

You are doing a very extraordinary activity, collecting firewood for supplies is a very profitable thing

Collecting the firewood is and burning it, and feeling that heat is the fruits of the labor.

of course my brother, very extraordinary, have a nice day

Yeah sure is, saves me quite a bit just pulling trees from the woods.

Have a beautiful SundaySearching for firewood is one of those important activities in winter. You are right not to take fresh firewood, as well as not burning well, they make a lot of smoke. Dry wood is always the best option @solominer

Yep, been learning a lot about collecting firewood and finding the right kind to burn. There is much to it but I think I am getting a handle on it all.

Thanks, hope you do too.

I think the mushrooms are Turkey tail, if you leave the logs with them on it you can harvest some and leave some for future use.

Oh nice, well these got burned but I see them all throughout my forests.

Great, you will have a good supply if you leave the logs with them on it. I bet you have other good mushrooms, too.

Making firewood yourself is cool!

wow your post is very good😊

Pretty good haul for one trip out. Great way to spend a cool/cold day. Gots ta keep the family warm!!

Hah yeah I really stack it high.. Yeah I do enjoy collecting firewood in the winter. If I tried doing this in the summer I would be a sweaty mess.

That was one of my favorite things to do in the winter when I lived up north. Like you....not so much in summer lol

You have quite complete equipment, right? And I see that the wood you are carrying is really very useful and I really like seeing the mushrooms growing.

Yep we got lots of tools here.

Good eye, sure are.
