About a month ago we pulled up all the spuds in the beds, and just left them in a box. They can be very sticky fresh out of the ground if cut in any way, and you need to use some really hot water to get it off. Not fun, I wanted to avoid that... So this year I tried something different. I let them sit in their box for about a month and now I am going to clean them and wash them.
The harvest this year is much smaller than previous years, the spring/summer drought we had this year was pretty bad. We started to see trees around us turn yellow and we had to step in many times to water the plants since they were not getting any rainfall.
So due to this the harvest is small, we usually get a couple massive spuds and then a bunch of normal sized ones. But this time we only got a couple normal sized and then many small spuds.
All and all though I am glad we got a harvest.
Will start cooking with them soon, the taste is amazing of freshly dug up spuds. The sweetness these have is unrivaled compared to store bought spuds. Such store bought fruits and vegetables had a long journey before they reached you, so having locally grown.. my own grown sweet potatoes is the best.
Got another box of starter spuds for next year, I pick the smallest of the spuds and save those to grow next year. I will not wash them, no point.. they are going right back in the ground in the spring of 2025.
Wow! Sweet potatoes 🥰 I also have sweet potatoes from my farm this year. Though mine wasn't that much
Oh nice, seems like lots of people grow them.
At the moment, I'm missing the kitchen hob. However, the knife, fork, and plate have already been placed in position.
Hehe I got to try them soon.
I am curious. Recipes can be exchanged at any time. Perhaps we can find a common path towards culinary revelation? That would be the ultimate.
Those potatoes look amazing!!!! !BBH
thanks a lot.. wish they were bigger though.
We tried a sweet potato plant last year and the results were not too impressive. We used to grow a load of normal spuds and they tend to do well here. This year we rearranged the garden and so did not plant anything. Hope to get more productive next year.
Oh damn, I always seem to be able to grow sweet potatoes.. but the other kind I seem to have lots of trouble with...lol I will keep trying to grow white/red/gold potatoes though, just seems if the slugs dont get them something else eats them.. for whatever reason not much eats sweet potatoes.
Wow! This is the first time I've seen a potato like this. The ones we have here are brown on the outside and oval in shape.
We harvest them in the fall. We bury them in the ground at a depth of half a meter and cover them with soil. So they stay here intact. We take them out of the hole when needed.
Do you mean Irish potatoes? These in the picture are sweet potatoes
Yes, Irish potatoes. Thanks for the information.
we call them by their color here.. so white potatoes, or red or gold/yellow potatoes. Indeed they are not sweet potatoes.. different plants.
Oh cool, I have grown white, red and gold potatoes. I find them more difficult to grow than the sweet potatoes.
I will keep trying though, this year my non-sweet potatoes did not do well at all from the drought.
What a pity that the drought has affected the sweet potato harvest and they have not had as many fruits as in previous years, dear friend @solominer
How great it is to see the fruits you have harvested, and the good thing is that you already have tubers for the next planting season
Congratulations on these fruits that you have harvested
Yeah it happens, this is our first year our of at least 5 or so where they were small. So knowing this we can make sure they get enough water next time.
thank you
It is very tasty when boiled or baked with sweet potatoes I really like this potato it seems that the potatoes you harvested this is certainly very good the result my brother @solominer
Nyan neujak prak knoe😂
I like them baked personally, the sweetness of them is so good.
I bet that dirt just fell right off after letting them sit! Looking good! I'm not really a fan of sweet potatoes, but I am a fan of people growing stuff, so I love this!
Yep pretty much, washed them with hot water in the sink as well. Luckily this time the sap did not get my hands all sticky which was nice.
Me neither, not my favorite food. But I can consistently grow it, which is good to know.
That is good to know! Might be a local draw for them down at the farmers market!
Im not looking to sell at farmers markets.. gonna focus on the garlic crops.
Interesting. Are you going to keep growing them then?
Your harvest is very good, even if it's smaller this time. Nothing compares to eating from your own planting, and you're right, we don't know the full journey of the vegetables we buy at the supermarket. It doesn't compare to the flavor of vegetables planted and harvested by ourselves.
Exactly, growing your own food and enjoying its freshness is unrivaled.
mmm they look so delicious! But are they red potatoes? here in Italy we have red potatoes that are sweeter than the normal yellow ones
@tipu curate
Not sure, we just call them sweet potatoes.
We also have red potatoes but they are a different non sweet variety.
Really, this kind of potatoes used to be sweet. We have to milky white ones and this reddish type in our area. But this type produces more than the others. I love them.
Oh nice, hopefully I will get better at growing those kinds.
Great stuff.
I guess I am seeing these sort of potatoes for the first time.
Oh cool, sweet potatoes are nice to have.
:)
In Korea, Gun-goguma or roasted sweet potato is sold on the streets during winter. It’s delicious, nutritious, and a popular snack that provides warmth and energy during cold weather.
Personally I like this, thanks a lot for sharing
Oh that sounds tasty... thanks for letting me know about that.
Glad to share my growing experiences.
It's been a long time since I ate something like this...I wish I could have some.
Oh well I hope you can find some in your area.. maybe they have it at markets near you.
Actually there is! I'm just too lazy to cook them haha
Wow... The sweet potato fruit is very good, even though you say the harvest is not too much due to the dry season in your area that is too long, so it makes you water it more often to get enough water, this sweet potato fruit basically tastes very delicious to be made in various types of food, but for me this sweet potato fruit is more favorite in my friend's krispy fry 😊
Yeah next year we will make sure they get more water.. We over watered some plants and under watered others..lol
Oh we love sweet potato fries.. they are good
very extraordinary, even though it's a little, you still feel grateful. Hopefully next year's planting will be more satisfying, brother @solominer
Ah thank you, I do hope next year goes better.
Delicious on my country we called : Ocumo , really sweet and nutritional
Oh cool, I think those are slightly different from sweet potatoes.
When you harvest sweet potatoes, put them in a cool area and let them sit for 2 weeks or more before eating, I do not wash them until I am ready to use, just brush the dirt from them and store them.
Ours did not do well this year either and we have them on a daily watering sprinkler.
Oh cool, yeah basically that is what I did.
Hmm well I would think they would do well with lots of water.. If I had to pick a plant I can consistently grow well its sweet potatoes.
Maybe the water will not hurt if you get them good and dry before storing them.
I did a quick search and this is what it says
To help your sweet potatoes last longer it's important to avoid washing them before storing them. Sweet potatoes last the longest when stored in a dark place for up to 6 months. Do not keep your sweet potatoes near other vegetables as they can cause other foods to ripen more quickly.
I also saw that you should handle them as little as possible.
Oh nice they look great. At least some of them.
Hah yeah, glad to have a couple at least.
I see those sweet potatoes and I am encouraged to grow them, what I don't know is how well they grow in little space. Congratulations Solominer, it seems to me that it has been a good harvest even if it has not been as abundant as you expected.
Not sure how well they would do in a small area, I always tended to grow them in beds.
Yeah it was still a good harvest, any is better than none..lol

Glad to see you had a decent harvest. I ended up with a few large ones a some small for my first try. I water regularly so I think that helped.
Thanks, glad you got some too.
Yeah we need to get better about watering them.
Great harvest you hve got
thanks a lot

The camotes look so healthy. The skins are smooth and have no blemishes. Hope that you will have more yield next harvest. !BBH !LOLZ
Yeah the ones that came out the beds did great.. nothing really preyed on them this year which was nice.. in the past mice and rodents find their ways into the beds and chew on them.. but not this year.
Hopefully you’ll have a better harvest next time. All the best !BBH !LOLZ

There is nothing more satisfying than reaping the fruits of our sowing
I hope the next harvest is even better @solominer
So true.. the fruits of your labor as they call it.. its the best.
thank you
Farming is really fun, and that is sweet potato, I really like it 🤗
I often eat baked sweet potatoes, it's very delicious.
Oh nice.. yeah they are easy to grow and I like how sweet they taste.
You are absolutely right 🤗
Excelllent.
sure is
I can only imagine the great taste of these home grown potatoes.
Enjoy the harvest!
Those potatoes are looking so fresh, they must taste so good!
You have an abundant harvest, @solominer. As the saying goes "You saw what you have planted."😊
