Hello Hive
I have finally been able to get some seeds to be planted in my veranda at home. I have been preparing the land for about 4 days now, hoping that when the 7-day period for viability preparation is complete, I will go ahead and plant the seeds.
I was fortunate to get some Roselle plant seeds after some efforts. I'm not sure if these will grow well in the dry season, but it is one of the veggies I want to have close by at home. Having fluted pumpkins right at my doorstep has been a blessing, and I want this particular plant and other veggies to be nearby as well.
Having gotten the seed pods, I dried them out in the sun and broke the pods to release the seeds. I have as many seeds as I need for planting on the farm when the rains commence. That will be some 4-5 months away from now.
I have also been able to get some jute mallow and spinach seeds.
The ground here is really dry and so hard that even after 4 days of wetting, it is still hard and not getting a good outcome yet. The soil needs to break loose before one can plant vegetables so that the roots can penetrate into the soil. Continuous wetting will eventually soften the soil, and then we can work on it with hoes.
One important thing we can do to preserve the quality of the soil is to plant cover crops. It oftentimes protects the soil against excessive dryness. I have got some of the potato leaves that were planted in sack here since last year. These plants have continued to grow and spread here even till now, covering some portion of the ground.
The parts that are not covered have dried up excessively such that nothing can be planted here.
While some seeds are ready, I am hoping that the soil will be ready too so that planting can commence this week.
Well, it's Christmas everywhere, but our celebration is taking a different turn this year as we are following it gradually, hoping to see what happens in the next few days.
Due to the circumstances surrounding my family at this time of the year, there is no preparation for the festivities; my younger brother is still in the hospital, and we are hoping that he recovers fast from the sick bed.
My activities are turned between fixing little house chores here and there, visiting the hospital, and trying to sew something for the little ones among us.
