I've been very pleasantly surprised by the sedum. I wasn't really sure they would survive the winters, especially on the stone steps, but every year they spread a bit more. The red ones are actually quite prolific, and we have them in little spots all over the yard now.

Sorry to hear about your luck with the hyacinths, it's been a long road to enjoying them here. The newest of these has been in the ground for 2 years now, the purple one has been there for 6, I think. They haven't always done well, but when the newest one went in 2 years ago, I dug them all up and replanted them with several inches of compost all around them. They've done great since then, as long as I can keep the chickens out of them!

The grape hyacinths will grow just about anywhere, if you want the smell without the showy flowers. They will spread quickly in good soil, and a lot of people around here put them right in their lawns, with the grass.
