Freeze, Fence, Client, PDC, Shuffle, Garlic Garden Tilling - Friday

in Homesteading2 days ago

It did freeze and was still freezing well into the morning yesterday. A solid smack for all the leaves still on the trees and bushes. By mid morning they were falling enmass from all the flora. I was astonished to find that the greenhouse did just fine with only the red heat lamp going. The pepper plants were still alive....

The garlic garden was a magnet for the birds and if I want to get it planted I needed them out. I got fence posts pounded in and then the fence up around the garden. The birds piled against the end as there was still some brewing grain accessible.

It was a fight the rest of the day to keep the teen chickens out and they got chased numerous times.

It was a bit sad going to my client's for the landscaping winterization. His wife is in the depths of dementia and he goes in for a pace maker next week. We had a good conversation and I wished him well and much luck and I hope the in home care will help lessen the burden on him. I'm figuring I may have one or two more times I will work for him.

Back home I was able to catch the last matches in the first round of the PDC. Barney whooped Super Chin 6-0 which I missed while out and I will miss his match today as well.

While I was finding the right length of fence for the garlic garden I noticed the mess my fencing was in so I spent a bit organizing it better.

The boys got home from school and after talking about their day I headed up to till the garlic garden. This is maybe the 3rd time I've tilled it since harvesting the garlic.

It only takes minutes to till the area and now the soil is super fluffed and ready to be raked then planted.

With 13 varieties I needed to determine planting spacing. I have decided to do beds which will have 5 rows spaced 6 inches apart with a 6 inch border and then a 1 foot walking path between the beds. I am going to make them the permanent beds that I will be able to till and still keep walkways.

Rained a bit as we were out soaking. The clouds kept it warmer for sure as it is about 44F this morning.

I'm looking at getting an S19 to use to heat the greenhouse this year. WAY more efficient than the S9 and will put out more heat plus have way better chance of getting XEC blocks.

PDC 2nd round is on this morning, Man Utd play soon which likely will be them getting run over by Brentford, we are going to Colville for the ski swap, then I have to work on getting the garlic all broken apart ready to be planted, and finish getting the beds setup.

Been getting cold here too but maybe just a degree or two into freezing so far.

Cold enough I started running my water pumps on the wood furnace, not heating yet but keeping the water moving so it does not freeze.

What are those two evergreen pine like trees in front of your house?

That's my client's house but the one by the house is a weeping Alaska Cedar and the one closer is a I think a Mugo Pine. It's been 15 years since I planted them for him.

Oh okay.. Cool. They look really unique.

Landscaping ornamental trees tend to have a lot more unique look than the wild versions. The Mugo was trained initially to grow low like that and both have more than enough water so they have grown really well.

Winter has set in and we will see snowfall in colder areas in the mornings and evenings.

We're looking forward to snow now that the whole family has skis.
