Yesterday started out nice and mellow as I got all the honeycomb pieces printed out that will get attached to the side of the printer. They each took about 2 hours to print and came out quite nice. They fit well once I trimmed all the goobers. I get the M3 bolt kit today along with more filament so will install them tonight. I got my clothes washed and dried early so I had my clothes for the day.
At high noon I finally headed outside to get the animal waters filled but when I turned on the faucet at the coop nothing came out. I strung out hoses then from the frost free and finally found one that wasn't frozen up. I turned on the faucet and nothing. Then I felt the frost free spin in place then heard the water running without the handle on.
MOTHER FUCKER!!!!!
And yes, a quick peak down the riser tube at the shutoff valve covered in water told me. So to the house I ran and off went the well pump.
At 12:30 I began the process of digging down to the base of the frost free. It's called a frost free because the bottom of it sits below the freeze level in the ground and when shutoff after use the standpipe drains so no water is left to freeze.
Half an hour later I was down to the valves that run to the coop and the studio. I was stupid sore already and had to be off the farm to pickup the co-op order.
My final piece of the honeycomb was finished as I dug and in my short break I got them put together and they will fit the printer side perfectly.
Numi is not available for me tea now so I am trying a new brand. I only drink gunpowder green tea and Numi was the only brand I've bought in years. Shouldn't be much of a difference.
I glommed down a couple muscle relaxers to try and head off the on coming pain I knew I would be feeling before heading back out.
It was 2 by the time I was home and back at the hole digging. I had gotten down deep enough it was getting tough using the shovel so off to the garden shed I went.
When we bought our farm it came with a number of older item, 3 of which are old train coal shovels. 2 flat blades and one scoop. They have 8 foot long handles on them so I grabbed the nicer handled one and used it in the hole. It works AMAZINGLY to work the soil loose from above.
It was 3:30 and the light was fading so I donned my headlamp and kept at it. Eventually I ended up finding the base of the frost free and could finally tell what the problem really was.
THE BRASS SHEARED OFF!
Clean break straight across it. God knows how long this has been like this and we have been wasting water and power as the well ran.
It was 4pm, dark, and I needed to let the water drain from the lines as the break was the lowest spot in the water system. So in the house I went for a bit to let it drain out more.
The Kraken game came on and I was able to catch some of it before heading back out to the hole.
5pm and I had finally managed to expose the T at the bottom of the 5 foot deep hole.
I was chest deep when standing on the T.
The Kraken were keeping up in the game when I went to get my 2nd headlamp.
I let the water drain for a while but eventually got impatient. I cut away the T to give me room for the cap and then bailed water with a small toy cup.
Kept bailing water and got the primer on and let it sit a minute before getting the cap slammed on the pipe.
5:30pm and the well was turned back on and we had water in the house again.
5 hours digging, 5 feet deep, 4 interruptions, 3 hours light, 2 muscle relaxers, and one insanely sore body.
@stryeyz brought dinner home and I ate while watching the Kraken lose their game. I managed to soak for a half hour but was falling asleep and was soon in bed.
Today I have to work on the water line as I cut away the lines to the studio and coop. I will likely have to rebuild the whole setup but this time I am leaving out the frost free. I should have all the parts I need but may have to run to the store for more. I am so sore still this morning and am not looking forward to all this today. Man Utd play this morning and I'll keep the printer working.

NOOOOO! I have nightmares about water things like that! I am so sorry! The only thing I am glad about for you is that you found it/it happened before the ground really froze up and it gets way below freezing, but still what a horrid thing! I hope you aren't too bodily destroyed today.

My heart sank when I realized it and I instantly became morose at the pending excavation. I had to do a bit of preloading to get myself ready for the effort and I'm seriously cursing NOT having a tractor of some kind yet. The "good" thing about our soil is it's mostly sandy so even mid winter it can be dug after breaking the ice in the top 6-12 inches.
It's really something I've been dreading as I had a feeling that frost free would fail eventually. At least it was a day I could devote to the emergency and not have loads of other commitments to deal with or put off. The rain today helped as I had ZERO desire or ability to go out and work in it. The animals can drink the rain until tomorrow.
!BEER has been my friend today as I have been dealing with the come down from the excitement/endorphins/adrenaline of the crisis and my attitude has shown it. Thankfully I've been able to focus on the printer and building antennas but I'm not looking forward to the repairs tomorrow.
Dang. I hope you got some !PIZZA too. I double hope you get a tractor and a backhoe implement for Christmas my friend, as a graduate of shovel university, the day we got both of those was mind blowing and life changing!
I’ve been on a dead run for the last couple days so I’m regretfully slow in replying and checking to see if you got that dreadful situation resolved, hopefully yes and with much restorative hot tub time at the end!

The frost free went at the barn when my husband was in hospital in 2020 and it's yet to be repaired. It did get partially dug out in 2022 but that was all. Still don't know why it failed. That was a heck of a job!
I'm just removing this one entirely since I have rarely used it in the past few years. It'll keep this from happening again, it's the third time I have dug this spot up and am not going to do it again.

What is the purpose of the honeycomb sides? Just curious...
Storage mainly as there are a bunch of fixtures that plug into the honeycomb.
Sounds like no fun!🙄
In Colorado our freeze proof faucet would completely freeze every winter……
-22 degrees for weeks at a time
Come Springtime the barn Again had water👍
