Today i decided to update you friends on how far my little garden have been doing, it has really been a struggle because the soil is not conducive for the plants, the soil is so rocky and its affecting the roots, preventing them from spreading very well.
Because am living in the city it has been difficult to get a perfect soil for my garden and this have been given me concern because I don't like the fact that my little garden is not doing well.
Finally the government decided to drain out all the gotter around me, and people suggested that those soil can be good for garden plants so i decided to try it out, i paid a labourer to help me get five bags of the soil , so that i can try it out, tho the sand looks so fertile but i can't say for sure till i confirm it.
So i decided to add the soil and some manure to the vegetables and see how it works out, then because of the dry season in lagos i had to water the vegetables on daily basis to help the manure and the sand serve its purpose.
My spinach is growing so fast and its making my heart glad because i love spinach a lot, its very healthy, unfortunately they are not many
Weeks before i poured out some pepper and tomato seeds and after two weeks they started germinating and gradually they are growing.
So there are some work to do, i had to take them of the Rocky and transplant them in the black soil i got from the street.
I had to look for a little bag where i can breed the pepper and transfer to a bigger bag when it grows up a little, i added some black soil then wet it with water after which i transferred the pepper gradually.
One important thing about transplanting is that you have to be careful to get all the roots despite the fact that they are tiny, missing one tiny root might cause the plant to die.
Same process i did for the tomatos and am seriously thinking in how to get a bigger bag where i will transplant them in the future.
One thing i have come to realize is that have garden needs much of your time because those plants needs water and manure, there is also need for other errands and care.
I abandoned my garden for over three weeks because i was very busy with some challenges and the vegetables started dying off because there was no water and manure but just few days of watering and caring for everything in the garden they are now looking healthy and growing fast.
Waterleaf is another vegetable i like some much and also happy that is doing so well, in the next two to three weeks i will be able to confirm if the soil is good and i will get more for more plantation.
Best time to care for the garden is early morning so that the plants will get relaxed before the sun set.
Things are becoming soo expensive and that really emphasizes the need of having a little garden where one can get some things like peppers, tomatoes and vegetables and that will save you a lot of money and time.
Stay tuned to see how everything turns out.

It's looking good ! There are things you can do yourself to improve the soil.
The easiest is to start a compost heap. Add any plant bits you have to it - dead plants, twigs, kitchen scraps (bits of vegetables, onion skins, and small amounts of egg shells, tea leaves and coffee grounds, but no meat or fat). Weeds can be sealed in a black bin bag and added once they are thoroughly dead. Once it's all composed down, it'll be soil with wonderful structure and lots of nutrients. It'll also have less risk of harmful chemicals and metals than the soil from the gutter !
Another thing you can do is add small amounts of chopped up seaweed and bonemeal.
But the best thing is to talk to neighbours who have gardens that are doing really well, and ask what they are doing that is helping. Local knowledge is hugely helpful, from tips on the soil to what plants grow best in your area.
Keep up the good work ! 😀 Home grown food always tastes much nicer.
Wow do you know I have never thought of compost heap it will definitely add to make the soil better, having a garden in the city is not easy but I will put all energy to make sure I get the good out of it
