RE: Change of soil for better growth

in Homesteading2 months ago

It's looking good ! There are things you can do yourself to improve the soil.

The easiest is to start a compost heap. Add any plant bits you have to it - dead plants, twigs, kitchen scraps (bits of vegetables, onion skins, and small amounts of egg shells, tea leaves and coffee grounds, but no meat or fat). Weeds can be sealed in a black bin bag and added once they are thoroughly dead. Once it's all composed down, it'll be soil with wonderful structure and lots of nutrients. It'll also have less risk of harmful chemicals and metals than the soil from the gutter !

Another thing you can do is add small amounts of chopped up seaweed and bonemeal.

But the best thing is to talk to neighbours who have gardens that are doing really well, and ask what they are doing that is helping. Local knowledge is hugely helpful, from tips on the soil to what plants grow best in your area.

Keep up the good work ! 😀 Home grown food always tastes much nicer.
