Dry Season Yam Check And Things I Did

in Homesteading6 days ago

Months ago I wrote about how I planted yam with the full assistance of empty bag. through our raining season I have watched my yam grow. Rain is actually what helps yam to grow and to produce tubers of yam. To keep yam planted with bag of cement in a well condition it's usually recommended such small planting should be supported with manures but the manures are usually to be added to the bag of cement during the mixing of the soil. How it's usually done is to add soil followed by bird or cow dump and for those who uses weeds removed from their farm such manures usually takes long to decay and before they can start to add nutrients of the yam they usually years for the yam would have elapsed.

For those who loves the planting of yam, cocoyam, and potatoes should know raining season is usually for planting and maintenance which involves looking after the farm to add manures, weeding, and protecting harm from animals including humans. For those who loves planting of yam should all know that dry season which we have entered should be known for the period to know if our yam are gradually becoming mature for harvesting. Agriculture needs both rainy and dry season because both helps our crops to grow and mature for harvesting.

Knowing how helpful to check yam farm when dry season is almost starting I went to the farm where I use a cement bag to plant yam. There I checked the farm and to me everything are actually going fine because the way the yam leaves are looking that's a sign that the tubers of yam yet to be harvested are in a nice condition. Yam stems has a kind of pin and anytime you check your yam stems and those produced pin are becoming dark and not as sharp when they were produced is actually a sign the yam is reaching a stage of harvesting.

Another important thing I usually know when to harvest my yam during the dry season is that the leaves of the yam usually turns yellow which usually starts from the roots before reaching the other part of the yam stems and leaves. The best to get best results from yam harvesting is allowing for everything to dry.

To actually know if what we have been waiting for harvesting are actually the kind of tubers of yam to expect it's good to use hand to open the soil or sand covering the tubers of yam to be harvested and when you open you'll know if the yam are ready for harvesting and if the yam produced a big tuber of yam. It's important we do this so that we don't wait to harvest yam and after harvesting we'll regret. I remember years ago when I had big yam farm and people were envious of the farm because it was big and even me was so happy but do you know that the harvesting time was different thing that I saw. The numbers of tubers of yam from a big farm was as if it was coming from a small farm.

Another thing I know I achieved today was to also know if the tubers of yam to come from the bag of cement didn't tear the bag of cement. If the tuber of yam in the bag of cement yet to be harvested is too big such yam usually open the soil and the cement bag from the side which is why it's nice to monitor and if such situations comes it's nice to use another soil and cover the yam so sunlight will not harm the yam or animals like monkey, squirrel 🐿️ will not eat them.
