I fell out of religion a long time ago for some very similar reasons. Obviously our experiences are very different, and it's abhorrent to me that anyone at all in a civilised society would treat anyone like you have been treated.

Not everyone who follows religious practices is that set in their ways, however; the United States Methodist Church is on the verge of splitting over differences in opinion, and we've seen all sorts of schisms of all sorts of sizes all throughout history since Martin Luther nailed his 99 theses to the door of the church. If anything, that goes to show that religion, if not manmade, is at least interpreted by humans, and interpretations definitely very.
