Business leaders or even ordinary people like us, are very much capable of becoming a stand-out in the society. What makes them or us be, is how we portray ethical values that will translate respect and authority to other people.
– Josh Rollins
Although many would claim (even politicians), to have strong moral integrity on their everyday endeavors, it is rather unfortunate to believe them most especially when we caught them right off guard; as seen on the news or as heard on the radio.
In an authored text by Josh Rollins on his "6 Qualities of Highly Ethical People", setting people apart based on how they behave can be assessed through a filter of qualities. On this #horizonalpha blog, I would like to point out and breakdown my thoughts on the hefty challenge of being a highly ethical person.
In school or work, we act as our own self – meaning, that although we become part of an organization or a simply a team, we function based on the role we play. Our individuality as the subject is very much relevant to how we emanate integrity on a variety of settings.
On Keeping your Word . . .
Highly ethical people can be dependable, as they don’t make promises they can’t keep. In the workplace, it would be worrisome if tardiness is an issue when it is standard operating procedure for everyone to come to work early. Thus, commitment to our role is the first challenge.
but also becomes the minimum measure of judgement.
For example, when we become a public servant, our word is stated upon taking the oath of office. At the core of our pledge is service, and that means upholding our best capabilities until our very last day. On the same sense that is applicable to ordinary people, this means that whatever our roles say in the little space at home or anywhere, we should respond to it with locked-on actions.
On Establishing a Genuine Accountability in their lives . . .
The second quality of an ethical person is driven by the challenge of genuine accountability. Implicitly, it clarifies that other people (whom we have known or not) are a part of own life, whether we like it or not. And bearing this truth that we are also accountable more than of our own is exactly what makes living comparable to a wave of rough and crest; highs and lows; giving and receiving.
Beyond the self-scope of responsibility, more importanty, people with integrity creates an influence to other people to be accountable as well on their actions. Just like public figures and influencers we see on social media, the range of responsibility given to them by their huge following creates a norm thus, should be used properly. Although humans they are, mistakes are normal and valid, but for as long as they acknowledge them wholeheartedly, it would not be against the this quality.
On Avoiding Compromising Situations . . .
Common in business corporations and institutions are dilemmas and complications that often arise because of unprecedented circumstances and less on unplanned actions. This is mainly because of the fact that readiness of every possibility and outcome are taken in consideration as early as the planning stage. However, for some who are unknowledgeable of these practices,
When it comes to coping up with the fiasco, a highly ethical person looks beyond each possibility and outcome, and thus avoid them even before they spring out to happen. The underlying situation where they could potentially harm their costumers or simply just other entities, is the ethics behind process control systems and regular assessments of every company.
A similar situation where this can be learned is on how we could have gone about on foreseeing the worst case scenario of this pandemic. The complacent response from the executory branch of the government fails a thousand lives, and that alone is the consequence of the irreversible effects of the action. That is why sometimes, to avoid compromising situations, we need decisive actions.
On Not Making Decisions based on Personal Cost or Gain . . .
The fourth quality is probably ‘the one’ major take on this challenge. The defining factor on every decision-making process of highly ethical people is MORALITY – which means that what is done (to someone or to something) should inherently be correct and just to all. The rules of the land don’t need to be interpreted though religion.
Speaking of making decisions, an ethical person strives to keep the cost or gain to the deserved entity, whether recognition is due for the self or others. Just like charity, the community per se should not be asked for anything in return, for the favor that we give is theirs to enjoy. Besides, the selflessness of the action is one way or another an honest good feeling that we enjoy ourselves as a priceless reward.
On Confronting Injustice and Unethical Behavior . . .
The reason is simple: it is morally upright to speak up with these injustices. Even at the expense of unfavorable consequences, the challenge that highly ethical people know is that:
Furthermore, this explains how we should go about being an eye to the ones we elect on public office, and a voice to the ones who are frightened to speak up. Showing our concerns and suggestions with all the right intentions, have never been an offense . With all the injustices happening in the world, it is only imperative for an ethical man to challenge and set things right.
On Making Mistakes, just like everyone else . . .
Lastly, ethical people earned their name in the society because they exemplify everything stated above. However, although they are just human beings who occasionally unfollow their own belief systems and principles, more importantly, they make mistakes just like everyone else. This quality makes them become aware of their own behavior and makes them willing to take the repercussions of their actions, but would never cover up or make excuses - should they be fallen into the wrong decision.
Just like our role models in life; the ones that we look up because of their qualities, they too have their own story of being unruly and selfish. But, knowing that they are capable of greater heights, it did not stop them to realize and thought about all these. A person with a strong sense of humility is indeed one challenging way to be.
For all the sham personalities in the society, values like integrity really do make impactful influence especially to the younger generation. The hard truth is: they are not taught by any course in school nor they can be bought with any monetary value,
The six qualities proposed by Josh Rollins are merely broad specs of what it takes to be a highly ethical person. A rather baffling matter is the stakes that come after. The consequence of being a person with integrity is nothing negative. In fact, a rather positive and rewarding sense. As much as the veracity of integrity is concerned, being a highly ethical person demands only one thing – and that is, living in the truth and transcending it to other people (like setting an example).
