There's this annual business conference in Cebu that I attended for eight (8) consecutive years. I don't know if there's a better psychological term but at the end of each conference, I'd be europhic, elated. I always leave the conference with a renewed spirit, even to the point like I've been reborn, like I'm floating in Cloud 9.
On the first few days or if lucky, weeks, after the conference, I'd finished stuff I've been meaning to do in the last 1-2 months in just an hour, okay that's exagerated. But you get the point, right? Then the euphoria wanes as the weeks and months past by and one day, I find myself back where I started. It's very demoralizing to hear the voice within critizing you "See? You can't do it! You're back here."
That's when I knew motivation is a friend and a dangerous enemy at the same time; I decided I'd get rid of it. If it was the young Pat, I'd be tired just thinking of all the things I'm doing now and I'd probably ask myself the same questions people ask of me "How the heck you keep up with all these?"
With all the other things you're juggling, taking care of your family, a home to maintain, managing a team, showing up at work like you got it all figured out, how do you find time to love yourself? To cook your own meals, to run and lift as much as possible despite all excuses you can name PTC, a recent surgery, menstrual cycle, hormonal imbalance, a radioactive therapy, an overly extended meeting at work, the weather, etc.
"What keeps you motivated?" Nothing. When we were younger, the world sold the idea that "Find something that will motivate you and you're good to go!" And now that I'm older and definitely a lot wiser, I realized I could only go far with motivation but with discipline coupled with years of devoloping healthy habits, growth has been unstoppable.
