Breakaway communities (BACs) are an innovative concept that originated from the SPK Network, aiming to provide a seamless way for individuals and groups to create their own tokenized community social frontend platforms on the Hive blockchain. This technology essentially creates many sovereign online communities that run their own infrastructure and have their own economies. Soon, they will have their own token economies and governance systems, making them Digital Network States.
What are Breakaway Communities?
Breakaway communities, forked from the latest Ecency technology, offer a streamlined solution to quickly establish a personalized community frontend with a unique domain and customizable user interface. Utilizing open-source frontends like Ecency and Dbuzz (and it is hoped many other designs will integrate the technology), SPK Network developers have created a system that allows users to spin up their own frontends efficiently.
Key Features and Functionalities
Customization and Setup:
- Easy Deployment: By following the instructions on the breakaway.community website, setting up a BAC requires minimal coding experience. Tutorials and example videos are available to assist users through the process.
Additional features, such as colour scheme selection, trending feed customisation, and functionality, will be added over time. - UI Customization: Users can have their own domain URL and design their frontend according to their preferences.
- Easy Deployment: By following the instructions on the breakaway.community website, setting up a BAC requires minimal coding experience. Tutorials and example videos are available to assist users through the process.
Integration with Other Web3 Communities:
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Breakaway communities facilitate the integration of other web3 communities into Hive, allowing them to have their own sites and reward systems where only their own community members can post to the site.
- NFT and Bitcoin Integration: An example of this is that users with Bitcoin ordinals will be able to create their own communities and log in using their NFTs and Bitcoin Wallets and exclusively post to their own dedicated community platform.
Types of Breakaway Communities:
- Community-specific: Focused on a particular Hive community.
- Author-specific: Dedicated to content from a specific author or authors (under development, to follow).
- Tag-specific: Centered around specific tags or topics (under development, to follow).
Point System and Tokens:
- Earning Points: Community members can earn points through various actions such as logging in, commenting, posting, reblogging, and upvoting content.
- Tokenization: The tokens will be general Proof of Brain (Incentivised stakeholder distribution) tokens; however, a portion of the inflation will go to social activity on the platforms as well as to community stake-weighted upvotes. Each week, your points will be tallied and compared with those of other users. A portion of the inflation from the community's token is distributed to users in the network based on this tally. Therefore, the users with the highest social activity on the BAC from that week will receive a larger proportion of the inflation than users with less social activity.
Advantages of Free, Open Source
Community-Funded Open Source Model: Breakaway communities operate as an open-source frontend, supported and funded by the community. This collaborative model ensures continuous development and innovation driven by the collective efforts of its users.
Seamless Integration with Ecency Updates: Breakaway communities benefit from the latest updates to the Ecency platform, a tokenized, open-source web3 platform funded by the Hive DAO. This means that any improvements or new features introduced to Ecency are automatically available to breakaway communities, ensuring they remain up-to-date with the latest technological advancements.
We are looking forward to offering users the ability to select other popular front-end platform designs as well as Ecency so that they can spin up their own more custom-made social platforms.
How to Create a Breakaway Community

Breakaway communities represent a cost-effective and user-friendly approach to establishing a Hive-based social media network social platforms for communities. With minimal effort, anyone can create a personalized frontend, engage their community, and reward members through a versatile point and token system. As we near the full completion of the integration of tokenization into these systems, the potential for them to enhance web3 integration and community engagement is immense.

Finally a refresh. I was looking forward for projects of this kind. Unfortunately denser isn't ready yet, and the old-way based on condenser is far from being viable these days.
Are you going to make it also a way to run personal blog only? (i.e. per user, not per community?) Or is it out of scope and you are focusing on tokenized communities?
Yes, as far as i know, you can already set it to only show one blogger, multiple bloggers, one tag or multiple tags, and mixed onchain and offchain content in the feeds. If we are not there already, we are very very close to it. Would be great to work together on improving these functionalities. its definitely headed where you think it is
Wow, what a cool project! Quick question (I haven’t checked more of this yet) - the domain should be created elsewhere or do you also provide suggestions for domain creation?
From what I see, the domain is something you should already have in your control, and that's good. Otherwise, it would be really hard to maintain such a project. The system should be good at handling Hive tasks; adding support for domains would increase complexity and introduce extra security concerns.
For those interested in trying it, I can help with the domain and server setup. The best part is that anyone with very basic admin skills (even if they aren't related to Hive) would be able to assist in setting this up.
Thanks! Yeah I thought so. Thanks for clarifying! I’ll try to discuss first with the community, then if we decide to set it up and have issues, I’ll contact you. Thank you!
By the way, to be clear, I'm not related to this project in any way (other than keeping my fingers crossed, as I do for any cool project on Hive). I can provide some subdomains, like what I did for https://stem.openhive.network.
FYI @bambukah and @lemouth, you might be interested in this project since it will be much easier without the burden of developing a separate app.
Indeed, it contains a lot of useful things that could be a nice starting point. I have many more things in mind that should be built on top of it: for instance, controlling what is displayed on the front page. Unfortunately, I have currently no time to handle this by myself (but I will be happy to pair with a dev to move on, although every time I tried, it failed...).
Hey there, You can jump in our discord https://discord.gg/JbhQ7dREsP and see if you can get assistance in setting one up.
First however, try following the instructions: https://breakaway.community/docker-setup
(and click on "Watch tutorials on how to set up your platform" drop down)
If this fails, pls DM me, im in the usual places, telegram, discord, etc. We will do what we can to get you set up
Hi! In fact, the main problem is not to get assistance, but instead to find someone ready (and happy) to do the job. The reason is that I have no time to try this out by myself (at least for now) since I am overwhelmed for about two years. Moreover, STEMsocial being what it is, we cannot really pay for any dev. So we are more or less stuck until my agenda gets clearer. Every time we tried the free dev option, it indeed dramatically failed (so that I won't try that anymore).
If I'm not mistaken, @bambukah's app to do this went 'live' two years ago. Roughly. Am I missing something? Or perhaps this adds some functionality that SuperHive doesn't have? 🤔
Oh, yes, and partially similar to dBlog, etc. I'm not sure about details in features. Actually it would be nice to see a post with comparison of those solutions for different use case scenarios and needs.
Yes, indeed! That would be helpful when we don't need those services, ourselves, but we're trying to assist others! ⭐️
So it wasn't just me. I thought this looked familiar to Bambuka's SuperHive🤔✌️
Yup, that's the idea sir!
Correct. We plan to add the ability to host your domains for you, however, most important is that you can host your own first, as this is closer to true community soverignty. But resources are low, so any contributions are welcome to speed things up! Otherwise, we just keep on building
Thanks! I think this is okay now, as hosting domains could be quite complicated. Maybe you still have other important/cool features to add than the domain. Anyways, thanks and nice work!
So I can build my own world, add governance, then sit back and watch people argue about what I should be doing next and how? Where do I sign up?!?!?!
All dumb jokes aside, I see potential here. See a few issues as well but I'll wait until they happen before I can feel comfortable talking about it. I learned a lot from the Tribes approach. Hopefully others did as well. On the surface and from a distance, it kinda looks the same. So in theory that would give people a head start. First one that knows what a consumer is, wins.
Yes, We needed a free, open source community platform builder. as time goes on, and as ecency evolves, we will incorporate governance voting, tokens, etc. need help with OS contributions of others however.
also, would be great to get feedback on tribes and improvements that can be made there.
Also, bit of a side note. Must also be prepared to see an HP exodus as seen with tribes. A lot of local funds will go directly into those tokenized communities. That leads to situations where Hive community can't support witnesses, DHF and so on. While those people participate in tokenized communities, they're not acquiring HP either. There's no good reason I can think of why large communities aren't able to have a larger say. See it happening though. Not much power behind large groups it seems.
Interesting. going to dig into this more about the whole point system and rewards and see how that all plays out to understand it better. A solid video focused community however could make it big! Are there customized options easily to do on this such as the ability to run ads, launch their own token (is it layer 2 and what exchange can it be traded on)
These options are exactly what we hope to add going forwards, but we dont have that many resources avaible to prioritise them. any OS contributions to such are much welcomed.
We are about to complete a 3Speak update and with this it will be pretty easy to spin up your own video tube. we actually have a BTC dedicated tube that will be set up over the coming months.
Ecency also has videos, so a tube is already possible, but with a few small tweaks you can prevent any other type of content being uploaded and shown other than vidoes
Love to see this finally coming to fruition. IT's something that hive has needed for years if it is done right.
Every community could become a feeder into the hive blockchain and bring in new users and money to the system.
Hopefully it is easy enough for anybody to create their own community front end.
Please have the option to turn on ads in the communities so that we can start bringing money into the eco-system and give real value to the new tokens. Without this they will just fade and die as the tokens by themselves serve no purpose other than a method to distribute revenue build status within the community.
Revenue is key and will make it worthwhile building up a community and trying to bring in new users.
We think this is one of the ways hive scales. you can identify an existing online community and drop value to them, giving them a social platform almost for free. potential is there. lets see if we can do it as a community!
Ads is interesting. it all needs work. need OS contributions.
we also thought that top stakers could get special privileges, like mining community issued NFTs, access to speak in DMs with certain users, or ability to influence inflation. ad model is also considered but not built yet. you are right, these community tokens need sinks, not just distribution, else they go to zero.
also, we want to build it so that you must stake both hive and the community token to post to the community platform and thereby earn points for interacting on the platform and thereby earn inflation
Great to see this coming to fruition. I love the perseverance you engage to make projects happen.
phhhh! it literally took years! it has to happen tho. otherwise we wont have freedom online.
This looks cool. I think one thing Hive could benefit from is linking into the 'Fediverse' (such as Mastodon) to reach a wider audience. I have seen some efforts on this, but it needs more work.
Yes, for sure. I believe @vaultec's offchain account system may help towards integration of such accounts to post to these platforms
Hi, @spknetwork, that's great to hear! I have a question:
I already set up a community-based site on Superhive script by @bambukah on the subdomain https://shadowhunters.ilbis.com.
If I follow your guidelines to set up a community site, your script will override the previous one, right?
yes, likely so. Might be worth testing it out on a throw away URL and server first
Author-specific: Dedicated to content from a specific author or authors (under development, to follow).
I'mma gonna keep an eye out for this one
Cool! Looking forwards to you using this!
Wow!! 😮
Team has worked hard on this to get it to this point
This is interesting.
That's impressive! Going to look into this as I don't want to miss the whole fun! lol
Thank you!! team has worked hard for 2.5 years on this!
didnt we already try this with steem engine? no one cares about some second layer token. peopel barely care about hive, so why would thyey care about anothe3r hive engine style token? even if it was layer 1 and on the internal exchange, like we should have had this shit YEARS ago during steem lol
hive is gonna just die out i guess and go down to under a penny when ebveryone leaves and teh whales get out and i mean, wtf, what else is gonan happen
i dont see ned or dan or steemiut incs drama, or anything fun, hive is so fucking depressing now. and this isnt gonna help.
hive needs to get deep into the darkbnet, ulkraine war, get into like assasinations drugs guns, fosscad, we need to use hive for serious shit, for revolutions, establishing paralel governments, in Burma, africa, start there, take over a country, start doing some crazy shit with hive, use it to host websites that get censored, make it a weapon.
go for it. spin up a front end and get your revolution going dude!
Key difference, among many others... this is free and completely open source and anyone can set one up with a little bit of online admin effort
If a community doesn't have an economy, voting system, a platform upon which to do it, parallel things aren't possible. Start here, keep building. No one is paying us for this. Any OS contributions welcome. Stay away from the sketchy shit in your comment above, everything going to be fine. Keep on building.
Sometimes distribution of the same non KYC stable coin on both sides of a boarder is all that is needed to make the point...
Soo cool :)!

Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 65/75) Liquid rewards.
May be we can use it as a replacement of Facebook workplace ?
possible!
Maybe HIVE Bitcoin ordinals.
this sounds really cool
