I'll try something different today - here’s some real talk:
Earlier today, @hiveusmaximus got his reputation knocked down to -1 because someone decided to be toxic again. The only way to fix it and make his posts visible again was for me to vote them back up.
This kind of thing is a major reason Hive hasn’t grown like it could. Downvotes are too often used to shut people, projects & ideas down instead of encouraging acceleration & positivty.
Think about what Hive has done:
- We had social finance (SoFi) before it became hot.
- We were early in decentralized finance (DeFi).
- We were into blockchain gaming (GameFi) before it blew up.
- We hosted AI content onchain before it got popular.
- We had DAOs before they got popular.
- In 2020, Hive was known all across Web3 for showing what decentralised governance meant, after the fork. Let me repeat: EVERYONE knew about us!
Hive has led the way in so many areas, but we’ve held ourselves back with a “crab-bucket mentality” - a culture where people pull others down instead of helping them succeed.
What Is the Crab-Bucket Mentality?
Imagine crabs in a bucket. When one crab tries to climb out, the others pull it back down.
- “If I can’t have it, neither should you.”
- “Don’t get ahead of us; stay where you are.”
This way of thinking stops progress. Instead of helping each other grow, we make sure no one gets too far ahead.
To quote the Steem Whitepaper:
Does this sound familiar? Here are my two most recent experiences:
- I developed a Hive integration for ElizaOS, the most popular opensource AI agent framework and shared my progress publically. It got downvoted for “chain spam.” If I didn’t have enough Hivepower, it would have disappeared completely.
- I'm building a project with another blockchain technology and held an airdrop for Hivers, hoping to foster cross-chain collaboration and to introduce new concepts. The reaction? “How dare you build outside of Hive!”. Downvoted.
I don’t think most people are happy with the status quo. Hive’s success can’t depend on short-term pumps, while other blockchains and even meme coins surpass us. Becoming a meme coin isn’t the answer either.
For the past eight years, I’ve worked to bring new ideas to Steem, Hive, and Splinterlands. Facing resistance is part of being early and vocal, but it’s frustrating to see the same patterns again and again.
Progress doesn’t wait. If you’re worried about “chain spam,” let me tell you: AGI (artificial general intelligence) is coming, you won't easily spot who's human and who's not, and downvotes won’t stop it. What they will do is push away new users, ideas, as well existing users.
Remember, @coruscate? Currently 236k followers on X - hasn't posted since '21.
Remember, @justineh? Currently 56k followers on X - hasn't posted since '20.
Here's a quote from, @justineh:
Hive is not just content, but a huge majority of the inflation pool is allocated out each day to it, and the more I look around, the more I ask myself why.. as there is no incentive for creators to entertain and bring the masses, we need to change that.
Content is our store front currently, and sometimes I think we are too stuck in our echo chamber to even acknowledge that we are failing at attracting anyone with it, and that’s a huge mistake imo.
Justine is correct, it's always about rewards. Bob thinks Alice shouldn't get that many rewards? Downvote her, regardless of her negative experience. Bob's response: Don't hate the player, hate the game. Does this remind you of something? Crab Bucket Mentality.
While other Web3 communities are focused on building and "accelerating", we’re stuck fighting over small issues that hold us back. Here's an example of Farcaster and their Degen Token - all without downvotes.
So let me ask you: Are we crabs, pulling each other down? Or are we bees, pulling each other up and building something amazing together?
The choice is yours.
Also it's hilarious how you had disappeared for years from hive and only became active again once you got kicked out of top 20. You are barely clinging there so that's the only reason you active again...developing shit that bring no value to save face
Cut the bs. You don't give a shit about hive. All you care is to not lose the cow you milk
Says the one who's never done a single thing for Hive besides shitposting. Loser 😂
"loser"
Said the guy who will be unable to provide for his family without his top 20 witness position. Lmao. Your words ;)
Sucking virtual cock to get food on the table. Such a winner 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Glad you got out of the bucket with at least 2 mil Hive though..... good work!
"selling is good for token distribution something something. I love hive so much I dump every last penny" 😂😂😂
ye this kind of person is what is wrong with Hive and there are so many like him.....
I think we should be less restrictive regarding content, only filter illegal content on the front-end level (which has to be done anyway) and find a better solution for downvotes, which are not in the spirit of the open, free, permissionless nature of crypto. Crypto is all about freedom, being less restrictive than web 2.0 and traditional banking.
Our biggest asset is also the biggest failure on hive. Our token distribution.
Rewards should be a layer two solution and the main hive token should be a staking reward. Unfortunately we never did get the smt's that were promised so many years ago and could have moved rewards to separate tokens on layer two with a hive based market to buy and sell them.
If rewards were community moderated on a token by token basis and less valuable than the base token then we would probably have 10x the amount of users by now. We wouldn't have lost tens of thousands of good people over being flagged and there would be no need for accounts like hive watchers that drive our numbers down even lower.
I think a proper way to build second layer communities wordpress style, drag and drop widgets, built in ad revenue and each community a funnel to the chain and bringing ad revenue into the chain could have been epic.
Too many people here are happy with the status quo and those smart enough to change it are probably earning enough right now that they don't want that change to happen.
@therealwolf has dumped over 2 million of free hive with nothing to show for. Yes, distribution is a problem I agree
love pro Hive people.... not sure about this guy though, you know him? https://peakd.com/@w3417h/wallet
I forgot to add that Hiveus Maximus fking fooled me, making me believe it was an actually person x)
Here's a name idea for your next bot
Triggeredmuchmaximus
I cannot disagree with any of this. I been here for almost 2000 days now. Active and posting for almost 2000 days strait. I am building on Hive.
I see what was said in this post all the time.
I believe in Hive and I am working to help break the negative cycle.
so you made an auto posting AI thing and are self voting it right?
Hiveus Maximus is a little "spammy" on Snaps if you ask me.
But if we want Snaps & Waves to be like X, should it be spammy? People on X fking post every single minute of their life.
You might be right about they haven't posted in years on Hive, but I don't they are the best examples since they haven't posted on X either in years x)
Regarding the Downvotes. It seems like Trumpman just doesn't like you, it seems more personally than anything regarding your project. (Also, I completely pulled that out of my Arse and I do not speak on behave of Trump :D)
He has dumped over 2 millions hive and is on perpetual power down. Yet pretends to be a hive saint/lover cause he made a game nobody plays on another chain and some shitty ai.
I think new ideas are great and should be welcome. AI Agents are all the rage in crypto right now, we should encourage it on HIVE it might be a way to bring more attention to HIVE ecosystem...
I am also involved in this downvote without no tangible reasons. Can something be done to stop this? Sometimes I got scared of writing
Boohoo cry me a river. Hive isnt growing cause leeches like you dump hundreds of thousands of hive you get for free while delivering nothing that actually brings value. It's surprising we even get any random pumps and some price action with all the dumping going on by mega leeches like you.
Might have to make a list.....
I got no problem, per se, with ai bots posting to the chain, in fact, if it increases cross pollination between 'those people' and the restofus, I'm all for it.
As long as the content is clearly marked, as this account is, and rewards are burned, I see no abuse of the pool.
If it is possible, notifying users of posts that they might find interesting would help with the content finding hurdle.
I would dearly love to see the !drama bot brought back into action.
It made following the drama in the crowd much easier.
You should decline rewards on comments, too.
Imo.
Yes, since the rewards have not been declined, it will be considered an AI-spam farm.
I see that the community already reacted since the reputation has been already reduced to 2.
I will clear out the remaining "milk".
