"The Crowd A study of the Popular Mind" by Gustave Le Bon is a classic study of human social instincts.
Here is one gem: "In a crowd, the unconscious personality dominates the conscious personality. As if in a hypnotic trance, the unconscious personality resonates with the ideas and feelings of its adopted crowd."

I studied that book decades ago. But it is one thing to know something in the abstract and another thing knowing by experience. The social instinct of unconsciously adapting to group narrative is stronger than I ever imagined. It's bad!
