I thought it was odd when I got the first downvote with no comment on my post about my dog dying. I just looked and there is another one. Now normally my rule is that I ONLY SELF VOTE on my posts when someone downvotes them without reason. However, #VYB has provided a compelling reason to not do that. I'll hold off.
What does it say about the character of someone that downvotes a post like...
Not particularly nice people. I wonder how much time they spend in their life virtue signaling to make up for their character? Perhaps none, perhaps a lot.

Regarding self-votes, we acknowledge that they have their place and that there are valid reasons for doing so (that's why we gave 10% 'credit' for self-voted posts when calculating the airdrop percentages, instead of zero). Your rationale above is one of those.
With Verify Your Brain and VYB, anyone who wants to self-vote on a given post can simply combine the tags #pob with #no-vyb for that particular post. That way, the post will earn POB tokens just like normal, won't earn VYB tokens, but also won't be called out by the VYB anti-abuse team.
In short, folks will be free to self-vote, it's just that they won't be free to self-vote AND earn VYB tokens at the same time.
I will keep that in mind. In reality since I have powered down most of my hive power my own up vote is not worth enough for it to be significant. I will stop powering down after next week and then work on building back up. I have continued to slowly power up POB and some other layer 2 tokens.

Sympathy for your loss. I dont understand downvotes much but am trying to follow whats going on. Seems like if a whale dislikes you they use HP to send your posts to never get seen land, or a dev can set a bot to track and auto downvote posts with key words.
Both actions are the opposite of free speech.
But downvoting your post smells of malice.
I hope #VYB helps, dont understand it, but the bit I did get sounds good.
I would have considered these bot votes but they didn't appear until much later. Bot votes tend to come rather quickly based upon some criteria.

I've spoken about down votes off and on for 5 years here now though I mostly don't. I just thought this was a new low.
Also no real way to go to war with these people. They are just alternate accounts that don't post, comment, reply, etc. Therefore there is nothing they post that can be counter voted on. Also I do not like the idea of down vote wars.
You could up vote things they down vote but remember they switched things on Hive so downvotes cost the downvoter nothing but you can only up vote so many times a day. So upvoting to counter downvotes would in the long run likely be a victory for the down voter.
