As you all know Nigerian parents have this special way of bringing children up to the extent that the child will never go in the wrong direction and that is what I love about my upbringing.
Every child has their way of growing up and that is why parents should never relent in taking note of their child's steps.
When I was little, I was a very stubborn child, it is what my mom told me not to do I always felt like doing it because I just wanted to see what was behind the act or let me say that I was just trying to be a hard nut to crack.
But my mom on the other hand made me believe that if I am stubborn she has a medication for my stubbornness. Haha 😂 she doesn't take nonsense from any of her children.
Or let me just say she was ready to give it to us as we brought it to her. The best part of my upbringing that I love was the fact that my mom didn't allow me to become a wayward child, she was so strong and she made sure she checked every step I took so that she could know the next thing to do with me.

As a young girl, it will get to a point where she will feel like she needs privacy and that was what happened to me, I started hiding things from my mom even the first day I saw my period I couldn't tell her because I felt like it's my little secret and I was ashamed to tell her.
But I couldn't afford to buy a sanitary pad so I quickly cut one of my tops into pieces then made use of it. After that, I washed it and that was when my mom discovered that I had started to mestrate.
She sat me down and asked, "When did you start seeing blood in your body?" I answered, "Two days ago,".
She shouted at me, "And why don't you tell me? Don't you know at this point you can't move around anyhow or have anything to do with a guy," I was short of words, my mom is good at scolding a child and everyone in the neighborhood always brings their child to her for beating and that was how strong and strict my mom was.
After scolding me she went outside to get a pack of sanitary pads for me and then she said, "If any man touches you now you will get pregnant, and once you get pregnant you are not going to school again so do you ever play with any guy in the street,".
Immediately she said that I began to get scared that if any guy touched my hand I would be pregnant, but then one day a boy that had been disturbing me brought a wristwatch to me, meanwhile my mom went out so I quickly went to meet the guy I thought no one saw us but I was surprised when she came and asked why I was with a boy.
That was the first time I was meeting a guy and I got the best beating of my life that day. That was part of my upbringing that I will never forget, but I am glad she handled my upbringing so well, which makes me a better person now.
The only thing about my upbringing that I wouldn't like to repeat with my children is beating, beating doesn't stop a child from doing whatever they want to do but it will only make them strong and have more courage to do it, especially children of nowadays.

I thought I was the only that had a terrible first day of period. Yours stopped at saying you shouldn't let a guy get close or you'd get pregnant, I was even blamed for starting early.
But it's alright. It's one of those things we learn so that we can be better for our own kids. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece with us.🌹
