A Journey of Unintentional Influence

in Hive Naija2 days ago

It was during a social welfare meeting that I first became aware of the leadership qualities I unknowingly possessed. A colleague pointed out that my presence had a claiming effect, encouraging others to take on responsibilities and contribute to our collective goals. This revelation was startling, as I had always viewed myself simply as someone who only fulfills the necessary tasks at hand. When I first started my job, my primary focus was on doing what felt right for my colleagues and our shared objectives, regardless of outside opinions.

From the very beginning of my career, I approached my role without particular concern about popularity or recognition. My philosophy has been straightforward. I aim to care for those around me. This sense of responsibility doesn’t depend on my personal feelings toward an individual, instead, I firmly believe that if we are part of the same team, we are obligated to support one another. This perspective has shaped my interactions and the way I engage in our office culture.

To my surprise, this consistent dedication and the energy I invest in my colleagues have led many to regard me as an icon in the workplace. Until this point, I had never realized how my actions were perceived by others. It was a humbling experience to learn that I was seen as a figure of admiration and inspiration.

The pivotal moment came during a recent reelection for our committee. I found myself nominated for the position of Chairman. My instinct was to decline because my self-doubt clouded my judgment. I had always held the belief that I lacked the charisma and the authority typically ascribed to a leader.

Nevertheless, the overwhelming support from my colleagues, including both peers and superior officers made it impossible to step back. They firmly asserted that I was indeed the right person for the role. My qualities of compassion, empathy, and the ability to listen resonated with them. They insisted that I led not only with good intentions, but also inspired them to follow my example, an assertion that left me both flabbergasted and deeply honored.

Despite my original reluctance, I accepted the position, motivated by the desire to live up to the faith others had in me. Since that moment, I have remained in this role, even beyond the designated term. The members of the association, in what I believe to be a testament to their trust and appreciation, have consistently chosen to keep me in this leadership position, even at the expense of our association’s constitution.

This ongoing affirmation from my colleagues is both an honor and a source of constant reflection. It astonishes me to this day that people perceive me in a light so different from how I view myself. My focus remains steadfast on making sure everyone around me feels empowered and valued. My leadership style (if it can be termed that) is rooted in a commitment to the collective good rather than a personal ambition to climb the ranks.

I've come to realize that leadership is not solely defined by traditional markers of authority or charisma. Instead, it can be manifested through acts of kindness, listening to, and uplifting others. By putting my colleagues first and embracing their needs, I have cultivated an atmosphere of trust and collaboration. This has allowed our committee and its members to work cohesively toward common goals, further solidifying my role as a leader.

In the future, I hope to continue embracing this unexpected role. I aim to further adapt my leadership style to include more collaboration and input from others, thereby ensuring that our collective vision reflects the desires and needs of all members. If my presence can empower even one person to step into their potential, then I believe I will have fulfilled my role not just as a leader, but as a steward of compassion and support within our community.

My journey in leadership has been one of unexpected discovery, characterized by an unwavering commitment to those around me. While I may never see myself as a “traditional” leader, I embrace the influence I hold and strive to honor that responsibility in every way I can. The trust and appreciation I have received continue to inspire me to serve my colleagues unconditionally, remaining true to who I am while enriching the lives of those I work with.
