Discovering My Adoption: A Heartfelt Response to Life’s Unexpected Realities

in Hive Naija2 months ago

Every child deserves parental love and care; unfortunately, not every child gets that! Some people have stood on the gap caring for these children in orphanage homes, and I see that as a good sacrifice to society even if they are being paid for the job. You will agree with me that it's not totally easy, especially when you are doing the job with love for the children.

...Let's talk about adoptive parents..

In our society today, or let me say here in Nigeria, a lot of people detest adopting a child. Couples that have been barren for years will rather prefer to keep waiting for God rather than opting for adoption. Some people who have the money go for IVF instead, and that's okay if your resources permit you. Some cultures even see adopted children as slaves and stigmatize them. In all these, there are still couples I have seen in my community—at least two different families I know—who saw the need to help society by adopting children from the orphanage home with the intention of giving them a better life. The kind of life they couldn't get from their biological parents for some reasons.

These couple fortunately have their own biological children, so they did not adopt because they were barren but because they love to help these children to still achieve their dreams in life.

It's also common for some couples who couldn't give birth for one challenge or the other to opt for adoption. While some of these categories of couples treat their adoptive children like their blood, some unfairly treat these children, and that brings me to responding to this week's hive naija prompt, which says,.
You woke up one morning to find out that the people you have always known as parents are not your biological parents. With your adoption documents in your hands serving as proof, what would be your next move?

My first move in this kind of life reality is to take some breath in and out and be calm, avoiding any rough actions or decisions. There is some information that warrants that you don't act immediately but rather take some time to reflect on it, and if the actions to take look confusing, you can seek help by sharing your burden with a close friend or relative. This step also covers other areas of our lives, not only for this topic of discussion here.

Having said that, I will accept the reality and then embark on a heart-to-heart discussion with my adoptive parents, unveiling every hidden truth surrounding me. If they will be kind enough to tell me all I need to know, then going on a search for my biological parents wouldn't be overlooked. This also wouldn't in any way hinder my relationship with my adoptive parents, especially if they have been taking care of me just like their own.

Wrapping up, this is one revelation no one wishes to experience in life, but then, what matters when we experience the unexpected is our manner of approach to issues. Finally, I will always commend couples who adopt children and treat them as their own!

The way adoption is frowned on in some parts of the world Ehn. You’ll think the children came out of the ground. We thank God for good souls who see the need though.

Exactly...but in everything, some people still have the heart to adopt. I have begged my husband for us to adopt a baby girl, hmmm, he declined it before I finished talking
Lol

Hmm. But It's not so easy to adopt one. You could also do the but you didn't also because there is societal and family pressure and you couldn't do it even if you wanted. That's the harsh reality. Moreover, society people start to see things from different perspectives and it's hard to give the child a normal life as s/he needs to face criticism. Isn't it?
I don't know too much but I am just guessing the outcome. What do you think about it?

I think you are right...some people around my hometown who adopted a child then, they were being mocked and the kids also felt discriminated in our community..it's sad
Families too don't usually agree to it
Personally, my husband said no when I asked him for us to adopt a baby girl..he didn't even want to process the information
Lol
