If Only We Had Learnt The Right Norms

In less than a month, the United States of America will be conducting their presidential election. The race for presidency in the country has been intensely heated. The whole world seems to be interested in who wins the American presidency. Donald Trump has been favorite though we don't know how far Kamala has gone in terms of winning the voters admiration. The beauty of this election is that it is fair and credible to a high degree.

In my country, our electoral system has been completely destroyed by fraudulent and corrupt practices. I mean, we all know that the one who usually wins is not the one the voters voted. The institutions falsifies the data and announces the whom the government of the day prefers. The masses know this but we can't do anything to stop the evil acts. The continuous practice of these kind of corrupt practices has been the major cause of the bad government we have been suffering from.

The difference between the American presidential election and that of Nigeria is the credibility of the process. The credibility of the exercise depends on the integrity of the institution. In Nigeria we have institutions which are mere structures with staff members working there but the integrity of the institutions are zero. We build institutions which are only going to do our biddings (for those in the corridors of power) than regulate the system of governing and administering the country. Such a terrible jungle.

I was passing through the street leading to my house, then I noticed how beautiful and attractive the new structure built to start a new school appears. I appreciated the decorations and the beautiful structures in the school premises. The owner of the school has really put in much from her resources to raise the school to the taste of the society. There is much competition in running schools these days. If you want to have patronage from the parents, you must put in really much and make the structures look attractive.

My concern (which prompted my writing this post) is that we have many learning facilities but we are not teaching ourselves and our children the right norms. We are suffering (and we know that we are really suffering) from corrupt practices in government and our institutions because we always turnover people who have not learnt to be truthful and reliable citizens. We have schools and we teach a lot of what should be used in building the economic system of the country but in practice we abandon whatsoever we have learnt from the walls of the school and give ourselves to stealing and looting the resources delivered us in our various units and parastatals for the development of the country economic system.

We are in the mess that we are today because we have been indoctrinated to believe in stealing and looting government properties and resources to enrich ourselves and forget about the country. That has been a bad system in our blood stream. We all think this way! Our mindsets carry the wrong perceptions about our country. We believe in killing than building the country. Our selfishness and greediness has destroyed the beloved country of ours. If only we have learnt the right norms, we would have had a Nigeria we desire.

That’s the human way isn’t it? Only that in a country where we have been deprived proper teachings, we lack it the most. When humans are desperate, they are willing to do anything

we lack the culture of honesty and discipline. Thank you for stopping by. #gm
