The extra holiday should be to celebrate the firstborn child

Holidays are often welcome in Nigeria, probably because we work round the clock and hardly have time to rest. Despite the holidays, some people would not just be able to observe them, probably because of their essential services like the medics and uniformed personnel or just because they are not wired to rest on free days.

I have once advocated that we enjoy a four-day workday within a week compared to the five days that are the norm. Beyond rest, there goes the need to celebrate occasions and sometimes, ourselves. We could equally identify some special class of people who have been neglected or deserve accolades, or it could be events like the #ENDSARS #ENDBADGOVERNANCE movement in 2020, where youths demonstrated action against bad governance through peaceful protests nationwide. But there's a special class of people I would want us to celebrate annually, observing a holiday for.

FIRSTBORN CHILDREN HOLIDAY

I see the sacrifices of firstborn children in taking care of the younger ones and marvel at how they can cope with such responsibilities. Thankfully, I am not a firstborn child, and though not the last, I have lesser responsibility towards my younger sibling.

My oldest sibling is one individual I would love to make an example of. I consider him my superhero, as he comes through for me even when I know it is not convenient. I remember when he told my younger sister to not ask anything from any man, but rather, she should speak to him about her concerns. Firstborn children bear lots of responsibilities and take the front and fall for many things. They are often groomed by parents to be exemplary figures to the junior siblings and sometimes sacrifice their comforts for the younger ones.

Firstborn children are 2nd-class parents. They do practically all that parents do for their children. My brother remains a crucial push for me as he continually checks on my career progress, wanting me to get to the peak of my career. One special peculiarity with my older brother is that he considers friends of family to be family, and that's one rare gesture I have seen with anyone. In fact, all my friends are his friends or have had at least a verbal contact with him at some point. How he does that still amazes me. As much as he takes care of them, he knows my interest is being protected also.

Recently, my brother went out of his way to contact some high-ranking government official when my friend got stuck in a police net. So, yes, I run to him when there are problems, and he always comes through for me even though I've matured and am earning some tokens for myself. He still contributed some funds for my tuition last month while I looked around to get funds for my postgraduate course.

I bought tracksuit material for him since last year and got it delivered to him just some months ago, and that coincided with other gifts from my other siblings. All the gifts arrived within 24 hours, and he felt loved the more.

So, if there is an international holiday to be observed and celebrated, I would desire firstborn children to have that recognition and perhaps receive as many gifts and goodwill messages as possible.
