First December was the most anticipated day in my school. I attended a missionary all girls high school and resided in the boarding house. Every first December eve being 30th November night was so colourful. Lots of beautiful gifts being wrapped to exchange or give to dearest friends, boxing items to teachers, and house warders as well. Being a boarding house, those gifts were either brought from home on resumption or we send Miss Lily who was our boarding house mistress to purchase them outside school for us (it was authorized). The excitement on students faces when we see Miss Lily return with very huge bags containing orders was a beaming one.
Aby as I fondly called, my childhood friend attended the same highschool as I. We grew up together in the same neighborhood. We bonded so much you would hardly see both of us apart. We have so much in common even to our striking resemblance even though we were not biologically related. I remember in junior class when our senior students always mistook us for one another 😂 and most times we use their inability to differentiate us to give them the runaround when they want to punish us.
Some holidays back, Aby and I walked in to our favorite mall to shop a few things for school. She admired this baking mixer so much each time we visited. Aby has great entrepreneurship spirit and she's so industrious. She never stops talking about her Dessert Boutique once she's done with highschool. She has strong passion for baking and it brings her utmost joy describing her dream. It's always beautiful to watch my friend in her enthusiastic spirit she always goes on and on about my wedding cake. In her words, “I'm going to bake you the most majestic and exquisite three tiered wedding confection with elegant designs.” Aby took baking classes during long breaks and her aunt who is a baker helps her too. I love to see people around me win massively. This mixer Aby admired was small, strong and seemed durable and of course costly for high school kids. So I started saving up for it in senior class one and as time progressed, things kept getting higher in price so I needed to save more.
Fast forward to our final year in highschool. After Miss Lily had brought the big bags of gifts that were ordered and had distributed them to each person, on the night to first December, there were lots of wrapping and extreme excitement. Finally, the long awaited First December came.
I loved how the gift of dresses were given because you usually blindfold the recipient and dress her up with the new dress, could be your classmate, a senior or junior colleague. After blindfolding and dressed, the person is unfolded before a mirror and their reactions are always priceless.
Before this day, I had managed to save enough to get Aby the mixer. I didn't send Miss Lily, I got it myself from the mall during the previous holiday and brought to school on resumption. So on our Gift day first December, she gave me a purple wrist watch, it was so beautiful and loved it with purple being my favorite color. I didn't give her my gift till evening when everywhere began to be calm. I didn't want that aura of the crowd hyping my gift to my friend. It was a personal gift, directly from my heart that I had long saved up for to my friend. So after dinner at the dinning hall, we proceeded to the hostel. Aby and I went to have our evening bath to retire to bed. After that, everywhere was now calm and I called her to the box room to help me out with something. I forewarned her not to scream that I didn't want to attract people. I had wrapped her gift in a pink wrapping sheet (her favorite colour), brought it out and gave to her. She was surprised asking what was inside that I had to wrap it that way. She opened it and saw the mixer. She stood for seconds speechless looking at me. After she found words she asked how I could afford that. I told her I had been saving for it as I wanted her to perfect her baking kills so she would bake her dream cake for my wedding. Crying she asked, if it took me a lifetime to save for it. She hugged me tightly as she was out of words and prayed for me after she gained stamina. I was most grateful for the sincere prayers she poured on me and happy that I was able to support my friend in that way.
Today my friend is a baker, she is pushing her brand and doing explicitly well. I'm glad I'm part of her success story and I'm looking forward to my three tiered wedding cake
