I am not into programming and into scripting that much, but I heard that Python is a good high level, general purpose programming language for beginners, and that you can do a lot of things in it. One interesting fact is that the famous free and open source Blender (3D graphics) application is made/created in Python. Entire animation films has been created with Blender.
