A game called Cuju was played using a leather ball filled with feathers. It involved kicking the ball through a small net.
Games like Episkyros and Harpastum involved kicking and carrying balls, sometimes in teams.
In Medieval England (around the 12th century) a rough form of football was played between villages. It was violent, unorganized añd had very few rules, sometimes using animal bladders as balls. The game was banned several times by kings due to injuries and public disturbance
In the 1800s, football became popular in English public schools (like Eton and Harrow), but rules varied. In 1863, the football association (FA) was formed in London to standardize the rules. This marked the split between association football (soccer) and rugby.
The term "soccer came from "association" - "assoc". + "-er".
British sailors, merchants, and workers spread football worldwide during the late 19th century. Clubs and national teams formed across Europe, South America and Africa.
FIFA (Federation International De Football Association) was founded in 1904 in Paris to govern the international game
1930: The first FIFA world cup was held in Uruguay, won by the host nation.
1958-1970: The Brazilian Legend Pele made football global with his world cup performances.
1991: the first FIFA women's world cup was held in China, won by the USA.
Football is now the most-watched and played sports in the world. Events loke world cup, UEFA champions league, and AFCON atrract billions of viewers. Superstars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar continue to inspire new generations😀.
