I'll try to keep this short. So today I came across an article online with headlines that read:
Woman kills husband and feeds body to his kids
And I was so disappointed in myself, for just how fast I clicked to read the entire thing.
Now I'm sure you're wondering,
Just why in the hell would I want to click on something so atrocious?
Well then... I can tell you one thing: it certainly wasn't for research purposes, neither was it for an essay; and yeah, it most certainly wasn't even for enlightenment!
Actually, in reality, i believe it was because of one thing and one thing only:
The fact that the message was just so extraordinarily gross, that it tickled every negative, diabolical, inquisitive nerve in my body, prompting me to read - line by line - the entire 750 word article!
So, i'll be frank here, and I know some people might not wanna hear this but, this world is 90% percent negativity and 10% positivity. And you know what?...I'm so sick and tired of all those ignorant, docile people who constantly claim to "hate negativity" but "love all things positive" when in reality, they're the very same ones who would click faster than anybody else online, when presented with an article that reads something like:
Boy raids pre school with an AK 47
or even
Khloe Kardashian was cheated on AGAIN!
Look, I don't wanna be Debby downer here or anything but, it's just FACTS! I mean research literally shows that 90% of all news on the media is relatively bad in someway, and that a staggering 50% of people IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, have been known to be attracted to such news.
Yooooo.... Do you know what 50% of the world's population is?.... Hmm, if I did my math correctly that's roughly, 3.8765 BILLION people who would rather read an entire article on the "vile and despicable things corrupt politicians do at parties" than "10 ways to become the best version of yourself"!
You heard me right, apparently researchers call this phenomenon the Negative Bias of human beings. Apparently, it's this psychological thingy that makes humans more attracted to negative news or something like that lol.
Read more about it here
The report "News, Politics, and Negativity," points to the evolutionary benefits. After recording the physiological responses, sweat output and heart rate of people watching news footage, the study found that negative news stories grabbed attention and provoked a strong reaction, whereas the positive news stories had almost zero response.
But hear me out, HEAR ME OUT, bad news ISN'T always necessary a bad thing to want to listen to sometimes. As a matter fact, sometimes you NEED to pay attention to bad news. And no, I'm not asking you to pay more attention to murder, assault, or divorce cases - heck no! I'm talking about important stuffs like war, health, and politics! You know... issues that concern your own welfare??? Hmm mmm... listening to bad news such as those, would create a sort of awareness for you, keeping you aware and safe!
Haha, you don't wanna be one of those unlucky folks who's planning a trip to Hawaii when there's a uh.... new deadly virus on the loose or... war coming to your country in two days! You know, that type of thing.
However, you must still understand that this type of bad news is different from actualbad news.
They're very different.
You know what, why don't we try out a little experiment right now - yeah? Let's even stage it somewhere that rings much closer to home, like Hive for example!
Say, you come across these two posts with titles:
Now be honest, in as much as the first post to the left didn't exactly seem like a "boring" article, you have to admit that there was still this nagging, inevitable feeling that kept urging you to click on the right one! Am I right?...
Lol, they say curiosity kills the cat!
But what's my point here?
I guess all I'm trying to say here is that people need to stop being ignorant! Don't be one of those rainbow cupcake hypocrites who pretend to be segregated from all things negative but instead, embrace human nature and be negative!
Wait a minute, that didn't come out right😅. Ahah, let me reiterate : allow yourself to be aware of this negativity so you don't fall prey to human nature's negative biasness!
Slow down the cycle! And if you have the strength... break it even! Get rid of all those push notifications that keep popping up on your smartphone, filter all the NON IMPORTANT contents from the IMPORTANT ones on your various news and social media sites, and most lastly, if you happen to catch yourself falling victim to one of those negative bait headlines, just ask yourself:
Is this really worth gaining my short attention?
Couldn't there be something much more worthwhile I rather be getting into?
Do I really wanna fall down this rabbit hole?(trust me, once you cave in, the bad news just keeps coming and coming)
I really thought I was the only one that thought same. I'm just being inquisitive to know more.
Most times, I like supporting the villain in a movie not because I want to, but because I want to know how he feels and why he's the villain.
I read these kind of contents very well not because they make me happy but because I want to aware of these negativities.
Nice posts mate😌
Haha, don't worry. You're not alone!
I get that villain bias thing too myself. Although, it's often because I've gotten so fed up and bored with the classic hero triumphs over villain arc. Lol, it gets too old some times and you just wanna see the villain win just one time.
Lol, know what I mean?
Thank you!
