We were at the ATM to get the cash we needed for my return trip back home when the message notification came into my phone. I screamed and caught the attention of everyone at the ATM gallery. This news was nerve-wracking and I couldn’t fight the tears for too long. I had to walk out of the gallery to cry while my boyfriend collected my phone and handed his handkerchief to me. He went ahead to continue the cash withdrawal while I kept trying to stay calm.
All I could think of were her beautiful smiles and her voice. In December, I wrote a script for a health company and she had guided me with most of the information I used for the script because it was related to her course of study. Thinking of the fact that she was supposed to graduate only a few months from now hurts more, only a few months to complete a journey that started 7 years ago. Nobody deserves this kind of death especially not her.
We left the ATM gallery and took a cab, I was still shaking and sobbing while I held my boyfriend’s hand. All I kept muttering was, “good people do not last”, this is the sad truth of the world we live in. I gathered some strength and stopped crying, hugged my boyfriend, and waved goodbye. He didn’t take back the handkerchief, I have something that is a part of him that I can keep, and it’s always a pleasure to keep things that I can physically hold on to while he is absent.
While thinking about Sue’s life, I remind myself that life in itself has no meaning, we are the ones who give meaning to life. That is why we ought to spend our everyday lives doing what matters a lot. Here’s a quick question for you, if you had only 7 days to live, how will you spend it? We rarely give thought to questions like this. We are neck-deep into different activities which we think are fulfilling and things we expect to give us happiness.
I have taken time to study the lives of men we admired most, they are men who lived for others. They dealt honestly with others and were kind to them.
