I like the example you used to explain your point. The MC would have still gone through with the event without apologizing, but the fact that he recognised his mistakes and tendered an apology will make it easier for those in attendance to cut down their expectation from him. Once this happens, he can make corrections and get things running accordingly.

I agree with you. It's never a bad idea to tender apologies.
