WRC drivers cautiously optimistic about new tires from Hankook

in Rally4 days ago

Hi, friends!

World Rally Championship has a new tire tender in Hankook Tires after four years stint with Pirelli. I guess that any firm can become a tire supplier if they give the right offer to promoter when they put the tender for it out.

It just seems that this was the case. From all the firms which applied to be a tire suppliers, Hankook won. And I must say that I am not impressed. We used Hankooks last year and it is just not good as Pirelli and they are long from Michelin, probably the best rally tires.

They have different sides of tires, left and right, and how to take two spares in the boot of the car. It is hard to predict on which side you can have a puncture. Crazy.

Adrien Fourmaux (Hyundai) and Kalle Rovanpera are cautiously optimistic but some other are not impressed with their tires.

Grom my experience, it is good that they have kevlar sides and it is hard to puncture them but the grip is much worse with Hankook then with Pirelli. Also Pirelli keeps the grip even after some time and when Hankook losses it, you are out of the road. Bad stuff.

We can only hope that they improved the tires in second part of 2024 knowing that they are entering top of the sport.

I've never been a fan of Hankook tires... I'm partial to Goodyear. I've had Pirelli before, and they are a good tire, but I found I got a lot more punctures with them, and that's just from daily driving...

Me neither with Hankook. Michelin and Pirelli are the best rally racing rubbers for me...
