Sunday Feasts: Family, Fun, and Puri

Family time is very important, no matter how busy we are, it’s necessary to make time for family, especially when your children are young because they notice everything and shape their lives based on what they see. Although we don’t gather just to show the kids, it’s been our habit since childhood to eat together as a family. Dinner is a must, because during breakfast and lunch, everyone is busy with their own things, but at dinner, we make sure to sit together and eat.

These days, we’ve been a bit busy, and since my brother isn’t home either, we haven’t had that same enjoyment of everyone sitting together for dinner. However, whenever my brother does come home, our parents try to make sure we have a nice meal together, and they prepare something he likes. Our parents are unique in this way. Of course, all parents love and care for their children, but ours go above and beyond, doing things that I probably wouldn’t be able to do for my own kids.

A few weeks ago, when Shiraz bhai came home, it was Sunday morning, and my father sent me to get halwa puri for breakfast. The shop was nearby, so I brought it home quickly. We all love having halwa puri for breakfast, and it's very popular in Karachi. Having halwa puri for breakfast is a real treat, but the puris and the chickpea curry must be good; otherwise, the experience is ruined. I personally liked the potato curry that came with the puris, and the halwa was great too. Everyone has their own preferences, my parents love the chickpea curry, but it has to be well-cooked; hard chickpeas don’t taste good. Yes, this breakfast is quite heavy because it’s oily, and I can’t stop myself from eating more, especially since I need at least five puris.

Not just the adults, even the kids enjoy this breakfast a lot. My children love the halwa, and they’ll keep happily eating as long as you keep giving them halwa with puris. Their joy when they see halwa puri is something else.

Sitting together and having breakfast like this is a different kind of joy, and all the credit goes to our parents. They never miss these opportunities and turn such moments into colorful, memorable times for all of us. We are all very happy living by their values and hope that our children will follow this way of life too. There is great strength in unity, and success comes from staying united. We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday breakfast together.
