Double the Joy: My Best Friend’s Grandmother’s Birthday at Hagnaya’s Fiesta

Hey, Hivers! It is me, makiyumee, and I am back again with another blog! September had greeted us with a cold season. How are you all? Are you keeping yourselves warm? I hope all of you are fine. Last Saturday, September 14, 2024, was the birthday of my best friend's grandmother and also the fiesta of Hagnaya, a barangay in San Remigio.

My father and I went on a peaceful trip towards Hagnaya despite the freezing temperatures and pouring rain. Ignoring the weather, we were excited to go because my best friend and my father's close friend had invited us to dinner. The continuous beat of rainfall hitting the car's roof while we were driving added to the peacefulness of the journey.

I couldn't help but smile at how soothing the sound was. The rain softly tapped against the windows, and the cool air outside made a cozy feeling inside the car. The world outside seemed to blur, with trees and house passing by as the rain painted everything in shades of gray and green. The peacefulness of the moment made the trip even more enjoyable, and I found myself appreciating the calming journey, knowing that a warm, friendly dinner was waiting for us at the end.

The rain was still pouring lightly, and the temperature was much lower when we got in Hagnaya. I said hello and said a few things to my father's friends before starting on my own way to my best friend's house. My father's friend's house was a little further away from her residence, but it was still an enjoyable walk for me. It was raining again as I walked onto the quiet street, but not as much as it had before. The drops felt light when they touched my skin, and the rain faded to a light mist.

I continued to walk, one step at a time, enjoying the sensation of the wind on my face and the dance of the rain on the pavement. I finally saw my best friend's house after what seemed like a peaceful, meditative stroll. Even though it had been cold and wet, the walk had been worthwhile, and I knew there would be a warm welcome just beyond the door.

My best friend met me as soon as I walked in, and the sight of their delicious dishes spread out on the lengthy and wide table made me hungry. My best friend and I had dinner together after saying hello to her parents and, of course, her grandmother, who was also celebrating her birthday. Before deciding to go to the chapel after dinner, we discussed the things that we had missed.

We found ourselves walking through the main streets of Hagnaya before arriving at the chapel. Finally, the rain stopped, and the weather changed. The people who were waiting in or under the roofs now came out in great numbers and filled the streets with life and energy. The streets were bustling with laughter, chatter, and the stomping of vehicles before they were empty.

Although the road is muddy from the rain, people don't have any problems. The people of Hagnaya were able to celebrate their fiesta despite the weather. Families, friends and neighbors gathered on the side of the roads, some carrying umbrellas, others ignoring the cold and fresh air after the rain. As vendors set up their stalls, the smell of food wafted through the air, adding to the evening's festive atmosphere.

The streets, once quiet from the rain, were now buzzing with activity, as people of all ages headed toward the chapel to continue the fiesta’s traditions. The whole town seemed to be wrapped in a feeling of warmth and community, and as we walked toward the chapel, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement building inside me too.

After lighting candles and visiting the chapel altar, my best friend and I prayed in hushed tones to God and the saints of Hagnaya. Our prayers were a little lengthy, so we took our time in the chapel and asked God for strength and guidance. We've had a lot of difficulties this month that have made it hard for the two of us, but I know that if we ask him for assistance, he will respond to us in his own way.

As soon as we had finished our time in the chapel, we went outdoors to join the festivities of the Hagnaya fiesta. I went to Kofe with my best friend, and we purchased their tasty and affordably priced drinks. We smiled at several familiar faces we spotted while waiting in line. Some of them were people we knew from high school, while others were just people we knew, and we couldn't help but talk about them and the memories we had of them.

After getting our drinks, we had an easy walk along the muddy roads in the neighborhood. As we gently approached the new road close to the harbor, we took in the entire scene in front of us. I was drinking with my best friend when the chilly night breeze brushed our skin. The low temperature made me shiver but since I wanted to stay longer, I hugged myself for warmth as we continued to stroll around.

It was around 9 pm when my father texted me that it was time for us to go home and so I said my goodbyes to my best friend before walking back to the house of my father's friend. When I arrived, I was invited to eat and so I did since I was also a bit hungry after walking around. The weather was cold, and I needed my stomach to be full too so that I won't feel the cold that much. After eating, my father and I went home with a few plastic bags containing our 'bring homes' in our hands.

That would be all for my blog today. I hope you had fun reading it. Once again, this is makiyumee and I'll see you all on my next blog!
