[ENG/ESP] FRAN BOW & My First Impressions

The game I’m going to talk about is one that I’ve known for many years so It’s not a stranger to me at all, nevertheless, even though that I’m familiar to its name we never got to know each other, not to a much profound level, so years later I’m ready to change that and redeem myself by playing it to the end (Or at least attempting to haha) and by doing so leaving in this post (and the others to come) my “first” impressions of it, and maybe it’ll bring to you a new game to try out if you didn’t know about it.

Fran Bow is an indie adventure terror game that tells the story of Fran a little girl that witnessed the murder of her parents and that now has an undiagnosed mental illness because of these events, now trapped in a horrible mental institution for children, Fran will try to escape the Asylum no matter the obstacles just so she can finally reunite with her cat Mr. Midnight and hopefully go back home to her aunt Grace.

So, seems like a pretty typical indie game with a child that sees freaky stuff and the like right?, well it is a pretty accurate way to described it but (And this is what I like the most about this game) it goes so much further beyond that… Let me explain myself and stop being so ambiguous, I think one of the things that the creator really nailed with this game it’s the creepy feeling about being a 10 year old being held in a REALLY weird and hideous place full of other kids, adults with a very doubtful sense of what its moral and an event more shameful work ethic and in top of that an eerie atmosphere filled with the feeling that there’s always something even greater, bigger and powerful beyond what we see with our eyes, something that stays above us at all times crushing us and drifting away our senses of what perceive with our brain.

Throughout the gameplay we will may our way inside the Oswald Asylum walls in which we have to find a way to reach out the yellow door that it’s our final exit, and how we do that? With Puzzles of course! (Its always the puzzles god damn it). With each puzzle we find to solve there’s more and more answers that’ll guide us in the direction we need, that being coming up to different scenarios and possible but curious answers to resolve our problems like only a kid would do, distracting someone with something so that they don’t have any other option than to go out of the room, finding, interacting and combining stuff to use it in our favor, orrrrr… taking some pills to drug us and so opening the door to a horrific filled-with-monsters-like creatures dimension we normally can’t see, you know, lots of fun that every 10 y/o girl would love to have while escaping a place so close to what hell looks like!, so nice indeed.

Every room coming up with new things to search for clues or keys, more trapped ill children (With their own stories for us to see or interpreter, which is an aspect I weirdly enjoy a lot, it just makes the whole game feel more alive with so many stories to behold) and, you know… pictures of clowns in every room for you to find and then see jump up to a corner to laugh… (I lied, partially, no clown is going to jump or anything but you will see them, fair enough imo) All of these things and more are at reach in this girl’s eyes.

This game freaks me out a lot, I don’t know if its style that gives you that sensation that you’re looking at something that’s really wrong and distorted, or if it’s that when Fran takes a pill everything is filled with creatures we can’t simply understand, it just creeps me out, along with the soundtrack that is pretty chill for what anyone could expect but that it blends so well with the uncomfortable state we met playing this game.It’s really a cool game filled with true terror and discomfort that makes us wish that all of it is just another nightmare, and for that and what it could show me, I’m really excited that it keeps freaking me out thru the rest of it.

Honestly I feel I’ve come very far just by starting this game, I first got to know about it like in 2016 and what I remember from it, it’s quite different from how I saw the game starting it, maybe what I saw was an early version of the game or perhaps what I saw happens more into the game from where I actually left it (which makes more sense than what I said first, since this came out like in 2015), but it was SO creepy, I couldn’t bring myself to play it alone or more than just a couple of minutes, and even so the game stayed in the back of my mind until now.

If you like creepy games like this one, you should definitely give Fran Bow a shot, there’s no harm in it more than what could disturb you to the point of having nightmarish-fever-dreams(?).
Though, a little warning to those who are very sensitive, there’s a lot of blood and violent depictions in this game, maybe you can tell by the screenshots I put in this post but better be safe than nothing so I’m giving this warning, there’s also the fact that all of this is happening in an oppressive mental institution and I know that this is a delicate topic for some people who are not comfortable facing said topic and lastly but not least disgusting there’s a (although minor) character that is shown like it’s a perverted man that ask little girls for a kiss in exchange of a key, so yeah, pretty heavy and uncomfortable stuff, I’m not even done with the game myself so I don’t know what else I could find it, but always take care people, being safe is the key of having fun.

I hope to continue soon the game and make another part with my final thoughts of it, I had more fun than what I expected and that’s a feeling I always welcome, so maybe we’ll see each other with more opinions of Fran Bow(?) Who knows!. El juego del que voy a hablar es uno que conozco desde hace muchos años por lo que no es para nada desconocido para mí, sin embargo, a pesar de que me es familiar su nombre nunca llegamos a conocernos, no a un nivel muy profundo, así que años después estoy dispuesta a cambiar eso y redimirme jugándolo hasta el final (O al menos intentándolo haha) y al hacerlo dejar en este post (y en los demás que vengan) mis "primeras" impresiones del mismo, y tal vez con esto les traiga un nuevo juego para probar si no lo conocían.

Fran Bow es un juego de terror indie que cuenta la historia de Fran una niña que presenció el asesinato de sus padres y que ahora tiene una enfermedad mental no diagnosticada a causa de estos sucesos, ahora atrapada en una horrible institución mental para niños, Fran intentará escapar del Asilo sin importar los obstáculos que se le presenten para poder finalmente reunirse con su gato Mr. Midnight y con suerte volver a casa con su tía Grace.

Así que parece un juego indie bastante típico con una niña que ve cosas raras y cosas así, ¿verdad? bueno es una forma bastante acertada de describirlo pero (Y esto es lo que más me gusta de este juego) *profundiza mucho más allá de eso... * Permítanme explicarme y dejar de ser tan ambigua, creo que una de las cosas que los creadores realmente dieron en el clavo con este juego, es la sensación espeluznante de ser una niña de 10 años retenida en un lugar REALMENTE extraño y horrible lleno de otros niños, adultos con un sentido muy dudoso de lo que es la moral y una ética de trabajo aún más vergonzosa y encima de todo una atmósfera espeluznante llena de la sensación de que siempre hay algo aún más vasto, extenso y poderoso más allá de lo que vemos con nuestros ojos, algo que permanece sobre nosotros en todo momento aplastándonos y alejando nuestro sentido de lo que percibimos con nuestro cerebro.

A lo largo del juego nos abriremos paso dentro de los muros del Asilo Oswald en el que tendremos que encontrar la manera de alcanzar la puerta amarilla que es nuestra salida final, ¿y cómo lo hacemos? ¡Con Puzzles por supuesto! (Siempre son los puzzles, maldita sea). Con cada rompecabezas que encontramos para resolver hay más y más respuestas que nos guiarán en la dirección que necesitamos, es decir, llegando a diferentes escenarios y posibles pero curiosas respuestas para resolver nuestros problemas como sólo un niño haría, distrayendo a alguien con algo para que no tenga otra opción que salir de la habitación, encontrando, interactuando y combinando cosas para usarlas a nuestro favor, oooo... tomar unas pastillas para drogarnos y así abrir la puerta a una horrible dimensión llena de criaturas monstruosas que normalmente no podemos ver, ya sabes, ¡mucha diversión que a toda niña de 10 años le encantaría tener mientras escapa de un lugar que se acerca mucho a como luce el infierno!, muy agradable claro está.

Cada habitación presenta nuevas cosas para buscar pistas o llaves, más niños enfermos atrapados (Con sus propias historias para que las encontremos o interpretemos, lo cual es un aspecto que extrañamente disfruto mucho, simplemente hace que todo el juego se sienta más vivo con tantas historias para contemplar) y, ya sabes... imágenes de payasos en cada habitación para que los encuentres y los veas saltar a una esquina a reírse... (Mentí, parcialmente, ningún payaso va a saltar ni nada pero los verás, bastante justo en mi humilde opinión) Todas estas cosas y más están al alcance de los ojos de esta chica.

Este juego me pone muy nerviosa, no sé si es su estilo que te da esa sensación de que estás viendo algo que está realmente mal y distorsionado, o si es que cuando Fran se toma una pastilla todo se llena de criaturas que simplemente no podemos entender, simplemente me pone los pelos de punta, junto con la banda sonora que es bastante tranquila para lo que cualquiera podría esperar pero que se mezcla tan bien con el estado incómodo que nos encontramos jugando a este juego. Es realmente un juego genial lleno de verdadero terror e incomodidad que nos hace desear que todo sea una pesadilla más, y por eso y por lo que podría mostrarme, estoy realmente emocionada de que me siga asustando a través de este recorrido.

Sinceramente siento que he llegado muy lejos con solo empezar este juego, supe de ello como en el 2016 y lo que recuerdo de él, es bastante diferente a lo que vi del juego empezando a jugarlo ahora, tal vez lo que vi fue una versión temprana del juego o incluso pudo ser que lo que vi pasa más adentro del juego de donde lo dejé realmente (lo cual tiene más sentido que lo primero ya que esto salió como en 2015), pero era TAN escalofriante, que no pude animarme a jugarlo sola o más de un par de minutos, y aun así el juego se quedó en el fondo de mi mente hasta ahora.

Si te gustan los juegos de terror como éste, definitivamente deberías darle una oportunidad a Fran Bow, no hay nada malo en él más que lo que podría perturbarte hasta el punto de tener pesadillas enfermizas inexplicables(?).
Sin embargo, una pequeña advertencia para aquellos que son muy sensibles, hay un montón de sangre y representaciones violentas en este juego, tal vez usted puede intuirlo por las capturas de pantalla que puse en este post, pero más vale prevenir que lamentar y por eso me encuentro dando una advertencia de , también está el hecho de que todo esto está sucediendo en una institución mental que es muy opresiva y sé que esto es un asunto delicado para algunas personas que no se sienten cómodas enfrentando dicho tema y por último pero no menos desagradable hay un personaje (que es relativamente menor) que se muestra como si fuera un pervertido que pide a niñas pequeñas un beso a cambio de una llave, así que sí, cosas bastante pesadas e incomodas, ni siquiera he terminado con el juego yo misma así que no sé qué más podría encontrar, pero siempre tengan cuidado gente, estar seguro es la clave de la diversión.

Aquí fue donde lo deje

Espero continuar pronto el juego y hacer otra parte con mis pensamientos finales del mismo, me he divertido más de lo que esperaba y esa es una sensación que siempre agradezco encontrar, así que quizás nos veamos con más opiniones de Fran Bow(?) ¡Quién sabe!.
