Hands down, one of the most iconic enemies in Ghost of Yotei is the Oni. I decided to make him the second boss I tackled since the game gives you some freedom in choosing which of the six Yotei generals to face first. I’ll be dropping the full fight video soon! It’s split across three missions and I have three separate recordings, so I’m planning to condense the highlights into just one epic clip. 🎬
But before that, we gotta talk about how seriously cool this guy is. He’s one of those characters you meet and instantly admire—from his entrance and presentation to his sheer power, mastery, and storyline. 🔥 Even though he’s an enemy who did something absolutely cruel and ruthless to Atsu, he was just following the orders of his lord, Saito, the top dog of the Six Yotei. The Oni, like any true samurai, lives by a code: loyalty to his master, no matter what they’re plotting. 🛡️
The Oni is a classic figure from Japanese folklore—a horned, fanged demon that punishes both the good and the bad. That's why the character in the game rocks a menacing mask with fangs and a horned helmet. His mask is actually broken because when he attacked Atsu's family, she, as a little kid, fought back! She grabbed her dad's katana, wounded his face, and cracked his mask. That act had some seriously heavy consequences, though. 👧🔪
When Atsu finally faces him again, seeking her revenge, he clearly remembers the resentment from that moment when a little girl scarred him. This time, he is absolutely not holding back. Wielding a massive odachi, his swings might be slow, but they are heavy and lethal. Plus, he literally sets it on fire to ramp up the damage! Talk about high-tier gear. ⚔️🔥
But if the Oni has swagger, Atsu has it in spades. Her drive for vengeance has forged her into an incredible warrior. She often gets underestimated because of her appearance, and honestly, even people who haven't played the game often criticize her look without realizing she’s one of the best-written characters in modern gaming. Her mastery of multiple combat styles, her war experience, her use of various weapons, and her deep motivation make her one seriously unrelenting avenger. Go Atsu! 💪
