My Harris's hawk (2022.01.24)

in Feathered Friends3 years ago (edited)

I do not even remember when was the last time I took photos about my Harris's hawk (probably on 2022.01.01), so today I decided to take and upload a few photos about her.

She is almost completely fine/healthy now, but she still needs some time to completely heal to be able to grip/hang on with it.

If you do not know what I am currently talking about, then I tell you that she broke her left leg, and she had a left leg surgery around the end of 2021. I currently do not remember exactly when. Somewhere around November.

I took these photos with my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A12). I edited these photos with Snapseed (Android application).

Additional information:
I live in Hungary. Anyone can own, keep and breed a Harris's hawk in my country. All you need is the breeder's certificate, which is created by the government, and the government register you (or anyone who holds the breeder's certificate) as the owner of the bird. The breeder give you the paper with the bird, and you go to the government to fill in a form to register the new owner (yourself).

If you live in the USA, then it is much more strict, because you need to be a licensed falconer to own, keep and breed a Harris's hawk. I heard that you need an additional government permission too, but I do not know the details.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

She is really beautiful!

Thank you. She is also very smart and very loving. Harris's hawks are the only social predatory birds. They live and hunt in groups.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.

That's very interesting. You can see the intelligence in her eyes. Crows fascinate me as well. We have lots of those around our neighborhood. They're very active just before sunrise/sunset and like to roost in the old oak trees. Thanks and I hope you have a great week!

Your hawk looks well. I hope she (?) continues to heal well.

Oh man i got a heavy Bird Phobia...for real :D it sounds crazy but im heavy afraid of bird in special of Pigeons. Its maybe more a strong disgust then a fear. But strangely im very interested in Preybirds. Falcons, Hawks and Owls are beautiful animals and i love to watch them fly.

That you can own a Bird like this its first of all very cool. But do you have to show some kind of skills to the goverment or anything to legitimate an owning of such a creature?

This is the first time I heard about bird phobia. It is indeed very weird.

This depends on what would you like to do with the bird. To keep a bird like this to live with her without free flying her in the nature, you do not need to have any special skills, other than knowing what to feed to your bird. I usually feed pigeon and chicken to her, but I could also feed rabbit, mouse, rat, quail (and other animals) to her. I also trained her to fly to my arm, so I can call her to my arm. This does not require any special skills, but time (1-2 months), patience and consistency.

This is a very social and very intelligent bird. The only predatory bird, which lives and hunts in groups. And believe it or not, but my bird is more friendly and more tame than many people's dogs and cats. I literally sleep with her.

If you would like to free fly her in the nature, then you have to be a licensed falconer (and a hunter), even in my own country (Hungary), because according to the local laws, free flying a predatory bird is a form of hunting.

Thank you for the Luv. I also give you some !LUV.

Sounds cool. And where does she fly of not free? Is she tracked or does she come back if you let her fly?

She very rarely fly in the house. She is mostly either on my arm, or on me, around my neck, sleeping on/with me. I do not free fly her, because I am not a falconer. Of course sometimes I still go outside with her. I have jesses, a leash and bells, so she cannot go away. She does not even try. She love being on my arm. If she accidentally still would fly away, then the bells would be audible from the nearby area (she would not go far away either way).

sleeping on/with me

That's a cool relationship there you have with your Harris's hawk. Let's hope your hawk doesn't drop anything... you know... something that you need to clean afterwards, especially while you are sleeping with your hawk.

Anyway, I found out on your other comment at https://peakd.com/@xplosive/re-las3rbone-2022124t231750722z that you don't need a falconry license if you would just keep your hawk at home.

I give you some !WINE.
