🦉 The hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia)
📚 Tetrastes Greek: tetraōn hunting bird, -astēs creator
📚 bonasia the etymology is unclear, one of the assumptions is "bonum" good, "assum" roast (lat).
These wild chickens are slightly larger than a pigeon, but weigh about 500g.
The bird is secretive and inconspicuous, most likely due to the fact that it is an object of hunting. However, in spring or autumn you can hear their voices. Their voices are high whistling, I would even compare it with the squeal of the wheels of a car.
If in the forest you find something like this in the photo, then you should know that there are these birds in this forest, this is their droppings.
Birds are herbivores, eat greens, buds and flowers, and berries. In winter, food is more difficult, they eat frozen buds and catkins of birch, aspen and some other trees.
Отличное фото. Рябчик очень хорошо смотрится.
Wow, seems like a very hard to spot bird. I just looked it up on wikipedia and saw that it also should live here in Austria. But I assume it only lives in the Alps and mountain area where it is probably very hard to spot. Very nice pictures especially the first 2.
Thank you. Yes, these guys are pretty secretive.
