πŸ¦‰ The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)

  • Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): β€œA small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter ”(from: Jobling, 2010)
  • hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish

This flycatcher is also called "black-headed" or "birch flycatcher" in our country. They arrive at the end of April, although in reality it depends on the weather; sometimes I have seen them in the 20th of April.

As you might guess, it feeds on flies, but also larvae, some beetles, and even wasps and bees.
Despite its name, it still catches food by collecting it from the surfaces of tree bark, leaves, etc., and very rarely catches it directly in the air.
