🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

These birds are among the first to arrive after winter. While there's still snow, the sun already shines with a warm, spring-like quality. Males arrive first, and after finding a suitable territory, they begin singing songs to let other males know the area is already occupied. If another male enters an occupied territory, fights break out.

The females arrive a little later and, having found a partner, begin to build a nest. With the arrival of summer, the songs cease, and the birds themselves seem to disappear from sight, but sometimes you can hear their short calls.
