🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)
- Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit
- martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March
These large woodpeckers with long thin necks and crazy eyes are sometimes found in the forests of my city, but not often. They are very easy to spot as they are quite vocal and their frequent calls can be heard from afar.
You can also notice traces of their activity. Under the tree where this woodpecker worked there will be a lot of chips and torn bark. No other woodpecker species leaves such a quantity of garbage.
