🦉 The grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), also known as the grey-faced woodpecker
- Picus (lat.) woodpecker; in Romanesque mythology, Peak, or Picus, the Roman god of forests and the king of Latium, distinguished by male beauty, rejected the love claims of the sorceress Circe (Kirka), after which the offended Kirka turned him into a woodpecker
- canus (lat.) gray
I met these guys (male and female) at the beginning of autumn. They were examining trees together for food, namely insects. The male is distinguished from the female primarily by the presence of a red cap on his head.
It is worth noting that this species of woodpecker is not friendly and does not participate in mixed bird flocks as do the Spotted Woodpeckers.
Moreover, I once saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker chase away a Grey-headed Woodpecker, and it was in the fall, closer to winter, so there can be no talk of a nesting territory. Thus, we can say that the Grey-headed Woodpecker is a special kind of woodpecker, which has its own distinct coloring, behavior, and voice.
