🦉 The brambling (Fringilla montifringilla)

  • Fringilla (lat.) Finch; fi nco (old German)
  • montifringilla lat .: mōns, montis mountain, mountain range

For some reason, these close relatives of the Chaffinches are few in number in the forests of my city. I usually see them in small quantities at the end of April and beginning of May, but for example this year I have not seen or heard them anywhere at all.
I read in a book that the number of bramblings can change many times from year to year, until there is a complete absence of bramblings for several seasons. The way it is. And it is especially rare to see these birds in the fall, when they migrate.

They also feed on insects in late spring and summer, which they grab from branches and surfaces; during the rest of the year they are herbivores, eating seeds of plants and herbs, berries, and nuts.
