🦉 The grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), also known as the grey-faced woodpecker

  • Picus (lat.) woodpecker; in Romanesque mythology, Peak, or Picus, the Roman god of forests and the king of Latium, distinguished by male beauty, rejected the love claims of the sorceress Circe (Kirka), after which the offended Kirka turned him into a woodpecker
  • canus (lat.) gray

For some reason, these woodpeckers are few in number and I rarely come across them. Most often at the very beginning of spring, when the snow begins to melt, or in the middle of autumn
During the mating season in the spring, you can hear them drumming on the tree and singing. Their songs are leisurely and melancholic.

They feed like all other woodpeckers, on larvae, caterpillars, crickets, spiders, and are very fond of ants. In winter, they search various rotten places in search of insects, and also eat various seeds.
